BIG RIGS – Max Bennett, 2, checks out the steering on a steamroller during the 3 to 5 Preschool’s Big Rig fundraiser in front of Mt. Edgecumbe High School Saturday. Hundreds of kids and parents braved the wet weather to check out the assortment of machines, including road building trucks, a U.S. Coast Guard ANT boat, police cars and fire department rigs. Kids were able to ride as passengers on ATVs. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Sitka’s Virus Toll Rises; Hames Center to Close

By SHANNON HAUGLAND
Sentinel Staff Writer

A number of new positive test results for COVID-19 were added to the dashboard Thursday afternoon, and another one was listed before press time today.

The positive tests bring Sitka’s total number of active cases to 21, and the 14-day rolling case rate to 4.5 average cases per day. Sitka is currently at the “high” (red) alert level.

In other COVID-19 related news, the Hames Center announced through text messages and emails to members that it would close at 8 p.m. today until further notice, “due to the increasing cases of COVID-19.”

“Memberships will be paused until we reopen,” the text message said.

At its weekly meeting on Wednesday, the Unified Command discussed the upcoming cruise ship season, the successful reopening of Baranof Elementary for in-person instruction, and multi-agency planning for the rollout of a vaccination program for COVID-19.

A press release from Unified Command said the public health nurse, Denise Ewing, told the group that the state, along with SEARHC and the city, will be part of vaccination planning for the community; and local pharmacist Trish White “shared points of distribution plans for the phase 1 rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program for frontline health care workers and emergency response personnel,” the release said.

(More information on the meeting will appear in Monday’s’ Sentinel.)

Sitka currently has 21 active cases, and its cumulative resident total is 138, with 21 nonresidents.

The cases listed Thursday were for:

- a male, 70-79, tested Nov. 16.

– a symptomatic female, 10-19, tested Nov. 18, with a transmission classification of “community spread.”

- a symptomatic female, 10-19, tested Nov. 18, “community spread.”

– a symptomatic female, 0-9, tested Nov. 19, “secondary.”

– a symptomatic male, 30-39, tested Nov. 19, “secondary.”

– a symptomatic male, 50-59, tested Nov. 19, “secondary.”

– a symptomatic female, 50-59, tested Nov. 17, “community spread.”

The dashboard notes that “community spread” means that no source was identified. “These are the most concerning cases as their exposure may be due to an undiagnosed and/or asymptomatic case in the community,”  the dashboard says. “Secondary” means the case was attributed to contact with a known local positive case.

The one case listed by press time today for today’s cases was for a male, age 40-49, whose transmission classification is “secondary.”

Most of the contact tracing on the recent positive test results are listed as “completed,” with a few “in progress.”

Most of those with positive test results are isolating in Sitka, with one isolating in Juneau.

thank you for keeping us informed. i know i can get accurate (although rather bleak) information that is up-to-date.

i'm anxious to see the numbers go down throughout our state. wear your mask, wash you hands, keep your distance and avoid large groups that aren't who you're normally around.

i hope you have a safe holiday season.

April 2004

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
