Bob and Sheryl Ginn Mark 60th Wedding Anniversary
Bob and Sheryl Ginn will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, June 17.
Both were born and raised in Astoria, Oregon, where they met in high school and began dating their senior year. After graduation, Bob attended the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, while Sheryl attended the University of Oregon and then Oregon State University, where she graduated with a degree in home economics and home economics education. She taught at Astoria High School for the 1960-1961 school year.
After their wedding, the Coast Guard took them to many places across the country. Bob attended flight school in Florida and Texas, and after he became a pilot, they were stationed in Salem, Massachusetts, where their son Brian was born.
They then moved to Kodiak where daughter Susan was born. They had two more children, Brad and Shari, while stationed in Port Angeles, Washington.
The family moved back to the East Coast and lived in Rockville, Maryland, while Bob worked in Washington, D.C. Their next duty station took them back to where it all began, Astoria. Bob’s final duty with the Coast Guard was as the commanding officer of USCG Air Station Sitka, beginning in 1978.
When he retired in 1980, the family remained in Sitka and Bob became a partner in Sitka Electronics Lab where he handled administration and accounting. He continued his business management work with Sitka Community College/Islands Community College before it became part of the University of Alaska system. He worked as the accounting supervisor at Alaska Pulp Corp. until it shut down in 1994. He began a business as a computer repairman before firing himself to spend more time doing genealogy research with Sheryl and traveling the world to meet distant relatives they’d discovered.
During their time in Sitka, Sheryl worked for Dixie Rynearson at her shop downtown. She loved working among all of the beautiful artwork that Dixie sold. Sheryl further explored her love of the arts by taking many classes, including beading and weaving, at the Indian Culture Center at Sitka National Historical Park, along with joining Ocean Wave Quilters, The Sew and Sews, and taking sketching and painting classes.
Both Bob and Sheryl have supported and/or volunteered with many organizations including Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum, Sitka Summer Music Festival, Sitka Methodist Church, the Alaska Raptor Center, Sitka Fine Arts Camp, and in Astoria they support the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
Friends and family are invited to join the couple’s four children and nine grandchildren in congratulating them on the wonderful life they have built together.
