Local Wrestlers Compete in Reno
By Sentinel Staff
Five wrestlers from Sitka competed in Reno, Nev., last weekend at the Reno World’s Wrestling Tournament.
Mt. Edgecumbe High School wrestling coach Mike Kimber took a handful of wrestlers from three different age groups to compete in the tournament, which drew 2,700 wrestlers from 30 different states.
Evander Elixman wrestled in the 8 and under category, Sydnee Kimber wrestled at 14 and under and Mt. Edgecumbe wrestlers Deirdre Creed, Paul Johanson and Brittany Woods-Orrison made the trip.
Syndee finished second in the 145-pound girls bracket and was the only middle schooler competing in her bracket. Creed finished in third place and Johanson also placed high with a sixth-place finish.
“It was a great experience for all of them,” Kimber said.
“(Evander) got some great experience in. He definitely had the least amount of experience heading in so this was good for him and he wrestled tough,” Kimber said.
Kimber said Creed was “outstanding” at the tournament and could have placed even higher than she did. He added that the team is going to go back next year if they can, and that throughout the tournament they had Mt. Edgecumbe support from a former Brave now living in Reno.
“I always tell the kids, no matter where you go you’re going to have a Mt. Edgecumbe fan so it was really cool to see that,” Kimber said.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
