Coast Guard Picks Up 2 After Boat Grounding

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka picked up two men this morning from the beach at Low Island, where their boat had run aground.

Sitka police received a 911 call from the boat at 2:59 a.m. reporting the 50-foot troller Mirage was hard aground on Low Island, an outcrop at the south end of Kruzof Island 10 miles southwest of Sitka.
The Coast Guard initially asked for help from Sitka Mountain Rescue but tidal and surf conditions kept the SMR boat from getting close to the Mirage, SMR Director Don Kluting said. The Coast Guard then launched a helicopter to pick up the two men, as the SMR boat stood by.
The helicopter crew waited for the tide to go out to allow the fishermen to walk safely to shore, then landed to pick up the men and fly them back to town.
The Coast Guard said the Mirage reportedly had about 1,000 gallons of diesel aboard, but there were no signs that the vessel was leaking fuel. The Coast Guard said the boat crew will try to refloat the vessel on the Tuesday morning high tide.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the grounding.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
