The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
July 21
At 7:59 a.m. a bear and strewn trash were seen in the 4300 block of HPR.
A blue and gray Torker Boardwalk street bike was reported stolen recently.
A caller said her golden retriever was missing in the Darrin Drive area.
At 9:38 a.m. a caller said bear was walking along a chain link fence behind his house on Verstovia Street.
A woman said her silver wallet, last seen at a downtown store, was missing.
A man said he was expecting someone to deliver a firearm to him and it had not yet arrived.
At 1:20 p.m. a bear was reported eating berries behind a fence on Indian River Road. Police hit it with two rubber bullets. Officers also noted a large garbage cache on Andrew Hope Street.
At 2:49 p.m. a bear was reported getting into garbage in the 4800 block of HPR. The caller said it appeared her tenants were putting out their garbage, when pickup day isn’t until Thursday.
At 6:35 p.m. an erratic driver was reported speeding near Sandy Beach.
At 6:45 p.m. a caller said a bear had been in the 5200 block of HPR about 20 minutes before. Wildlife authorities were advised of the call.
At 6:48 p.m. a man said his son had run away again, about nine hours before, and asked for help finding him. He said his son was found downtown the last time he ran away.
A caller said kids were on the roof of a church. The kids told police they were a group from California doing mission work on the roof.
At 8:18 p.m. a man in a mohawk was speeding in an ATV around a trailer park off Price Street. Police advised the man of the complaint and of the consequences of operating an ATV on public roads in the future.
A caller reported an overflowing trash can on Andrew Hope Street that might attract bears. Police the trash was cardboard and wood, which wouldn’t attract bears.
At 9:26 p.m. a caller said a golden doodle puppy was stolen out of her vehicle while she was inside an HPR restaurant. The caller posted later on facebook that the dog had been found.
At 9:40 p.m. three gunshots three gunshots were heard off Darrin Drive.
A man was seen lying in the bike path in the 900 block of Sawmill Creek Road. An ambulance was called for the man, who was taken first to the hospital, then placed in protective custody.
At 10:20 p.m. a caller said her motion detector light was going off, on Peter Simpson Street. Police saw no signs of anything amiss around the house.
Police performed a welfare check on a child, and found the child to be happy and healthy and the parents content. They told police they had a heated argument earlier, but now all was fine.
July 22
At 2:24 a.m. a caller asked police to keep an eye on her rentals because a man has been trying to sleep between them. Police saw a man hanging around the buildings, but he ended up going into one of the units with a woman.
A bear was reported on the beach of the 2000 block of HPR at 3:47 a.m.
Sitka Police
Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Brian T. Nicolson, 51, of Upland, Calif., for allegedly sport fishing without a valid license Monday at Redoubt Bay.
Troopers on Monday cited Patrick N. Davis, 49, Sitka, for failing to complete the sportfish guide logbook prior to starting the guided trip.
Emergency Calls
The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 2:12, 4:06, 9:47 and 10:45 p.m. Monday.
At 1:30 p.m. Monday a fire truck and the ladder truck were sent to Sweetland Hall on the SJ campus where rags in a dryer caught fire. Fire Chief Dave Miller said the kitchen staff had washed the rags, then placed them in the dryer. “The grease in the rags doesn’t always come all the way off,” he said. “When they get hot like that, sometimes they catch fire.” Firefighters doused the fire quickly with an extinguisher.
At 2:12 p.m. Monday a fire truck and ladder truck were sent to 220 Smith St. where a garbage truck had caught on fire in the company’s building. Miller said the wiring harness in the truck burned up, and created enough smoke to set off the alarms and the sprinkler system. Firefighters used hoses to put out the flames quickly, but the truck was damaged extensively, Miller said.
At 1:27 a.m. today a fire truck was sent to 1324 Cannon Island Dr. on a report of a smell of Freon gas. Firefighters removed a refrigerator, which was leaking Freon, and ventilated the home, Miller said.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
