No One Hurt in Meal Delivery Van Crash
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

The driver of a meals-on-wheels van suffered minor injuries Thursday afternoon when the vehicle overturned in the 3300 block of Halibut Point Road.

Tom Conley, a volunteer driver for Swan Lake Senior Center, said the van’s brakes failed as he was on his way to the last four of the day’s 23 scheduled food deliveries.
Conley, 70, said he was at the top of Sollars Trailer Court and on the steep driveway down to HPR when he realized the van was not slowing as he stepped on the brake pedal.
“It was mush,” Conley said.
He pumped the brakes without any results, and laid on the horn as the van plunged toward the highway, where he could see a construction worker on the road. He said he was focused on swerving to miss her, as well as trying to miss a truck that was heading inbound on HPR.
Police Lt. Jeff Ankerfelt said witnesses reported that Conley successfully made it across both lanes of the highway, and appeared to be heading toward the beach when he swerved around a parked vehicle and crossed HPR again. At that point, the van toppled over onto the driver’s side in a yard at 3310 HPR.
Conley said police and fire departments responded promptly, and extracted him within 20 minutes of the accident.
Conley, a retired pediatrician at SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, was taken by ambulance to MEH and released later in the day. He said he believes he re-injured a shoulder and may have suffered a whiplash injury.
No information was available on damage to the vehicle.
When Conley was asked whether the accident dampened his enthusiasm for his part-time job, he responded that it had not: “When you fall off a horse, you’re supposed to get back on.”
