Sitka Volleyball Opens Season at SE Jamboree
By TOM HESSE
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Sitka High School Wolves officially kicked off the volleyball season at the Southeast Jamboree in Ketchikan over the weekend.
The Wolves split with Thunder Mountain and beat Juneau-Douglas 25-13, 25-23 as a part of the annual exhibition event to start the volleyball season in Southeast. Sitka is starting this season with new head coach Natalie Voron, who said Sitka hitters Elle Gray and Natalie Galanin combined for 46 kills on the weekend.
Sitka will be on the road to start the regular season when they head North to play at the Houston Invitational this weekend. The Wolves will get their first set of conference games next week against Mt. Edgecumbe High School.
Sitka won’t play Petersburg, the only other 3A team in Southeast besides Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe, until October when they travel to Petersburg for two matches.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
