LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
Dec. 15
At 8:38 a.m. a resident reported her husband was sending her text messages talking about harming himself. Police found him later. He said he had sent the texts, but was doing fine now, and would call his doctor later.
A traffic accident with damage and no injuries was reported at the roundabout Sunday night.
At 12:05 p.m. a resident asked police to tell a woman to stop calling her.
At 12:40 p.m. a man with a black hoodie was reportedly looking in car windows, then ran away on Smith Street. He was gone when police checked.
A business owner reported three abandoned bikes on Smith Street.
A resident reported losing her blue iPhone.
At 3:02 p.m. a woman reported someone had knocked on her door and ran away. She said she believes someone may have entered her home because her keys were missing. She called back later to say her keys had been found in her vehicle.
At 5:05 p.m. police talked to two intoxicated people at the skate park who had reportedly tried to start a fight at Moller field. They were advised of the consequences of their behavior.
At 8:42 p.m. a resident complained about being kicked out of the Blatchley pool. Around the same time, lifeguards reported a disruptive resident at the pool. Police advised the resident to leave or pool workers could sign a criminal trespass warning against him.
At 11:09 p.m. a man asked for help getting into his apartment at Swan Lake Terrace.
Dec. 16
At 5:06 a.m. a resident reported a vehicle had pulled up to a Price Street home, and a man was trying to steal bricks from the yard. The man drove off, but his license plate number was turned into police. Officers told the man that if they found out items were missing from the property, he would be contacted again.
Sitka Police
Walter G. Young, 38, was arrested on a Ketchikan trooper warrant on a petition to revoke probation. The original charge was assault in the third degree.
Niklas Peterson, 34, was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear on a charge of failing to have a valid operator’s license.
In Court
Kyle E. Kitka, 22, was sentenced to 40 days, with 30 suspended, and fined $500 for driving without a license. He was fined $500 for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the sixth. He will be on probation for a year, and may serve his jailtime through 80 hours’ community work service. He will be on probation for a year.
Jeremy S. Claggett, 36, was sentenced to 10 years for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree. He was charged originally with attempted misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. He was also sentenced to three years for misconduct involving weapons in the third. He will be on probation for four years. Charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third and misconduct involving weapons in the third were dismissed against him.
Emergency Calls
The Sitka Fire Department dispatched an ambulance at 3:18 p.m. Monday.
At 7:32 a.m. today a fire truck was sent to the Sawmill Cove Industrial Park on a false alarm.
