MEHS Picks Up Wins Over Nikiski at Home
By TOM HESSE

A 31-point night from senior Skye Shipton helped the Mt. Edgecumbe High boys basketball team cruise to its first win of the season, Wednesday, at home against Nikiski.

The Braves never trailed in the contest, eventually winning 71-49. The Braves were far from flawless, but a fast start and a lot of offense generated from backdoor cuts pushed the Braves to a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Nikiski made it interesting midway through the second when they capitalized on turnovers by the Braves and cut the score to 22-21 with 4:42 to play. Shipton ended the drought for Mt. Edgecumbe when he scored on a 17-foot jumper and a layup for back-to-back points. Mt. Edgecumbe’s leading scorer for the night tallied 16 first-half points despite missing three free throws in the first half and four over the course of the game.
Mt. Edgecumbe stormed ahead in the third quarter, thanks to a barrage of transition baskets and a foul advantage that put them in the bonus midway through the third quarter. The Braves scored 16 of their 37 second-half points from the free throw line.
Bobby Pate was the only other Braves player to crack double digits with 10 points. Paul Bioff finished with 9 points and Jamal Alstrom finished with 7 points.
Both teams were playing the start of a four-games-in-four-days stretch for them. Nikiski will stay in town for the Holland America Tournament, where they’ll play Houston, Sitka and Craig over the next three days.
The Braves left this morning for Anchorage to play in the Grace Christian Tournament. After that tournament the Braves will be off until Jan. 8 when they head to Kodiak for their second tournament of the season.
Girls
The Mt. Edgecumbe High girls basketball team was hardly in championship form for their season opener against Nikiski Wednesday night, but a big third quarter gave them enough to grab their first win of the season.
The Braves played well enough to start their season with a 36-33 win. After a dominant third quarter it looked as though last year’s 3A state runner-ups were going to walk away with the contest but the visiting Bulldogs were able to capitalize on key turnovers to cut the game to a 1-point lead with under two minutes to go.
Braves junior Tori Thomas was able to cap the win with a lay-up that gave Mt. Edgecumbe a 36-33 lead with 1:05 left to play. Nikiski got two more cracks at tying the game. On the first, Rachel Thompson shot long on a 3-pointer. Mt. Edgecumbe’s Angelique Zeller pulled down a contested rebound but stepped out of bounds with 3 seconds to play. On the final possession Nikiski never got a clear look at the basket and Mt. Edgecumbe was able to pick up their first win of what will ultimately be a four-game stretch.
Both teams showed rust throughout the contest. Mt. Edgecumbe jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the first quarter but failed to register a single point in the second quarter. The Bulldogs took the lead back with 2:20 to play and went into halftime up 7 points.
The narrative flipped in the third quarter. Mt. Edgecumbe took the lead back in less than three minutes of game play. Thomas scored the period’s opening bucket then Julie Amaktoolik registered a steal at the other end of the floor and fed the ball right back to Thomas to cut the Nikiski lead to 3 points. The Braves retook the lead on a 3-pointer by Renatta Olson at the 5:19 mark and took their lead to 10 points before Nikiski’s Thompson recorded her team’s only bucket of the quarter with just over a minute to play in the third quarter.
The Braves will see Nikiski again on Friday for the second round of the Holland America tournament, which starts today at Sitka High School. The Braves opened the tournament today at 2 p.m. against Houston and will play Nikiski at 3:45 p.m. Friday before ending the tournament with a match-up against Sitka at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
