Officials Play it Safe With Ordnance Find
By Sentinel Staff
What appeared to be an old military explosive device was turned in to the Sitka Fire Department Wednesday afternoon.
An unexploded ordnance was found at Sunshine Trailer Court. (Photo provided)
Sitka Fire Chief Dave Miller said the man who turned in the two-foot- long object found it during the cleanup of property in Sunshine Trailer Court in the 1700 block of Halibut Point Road.
“One of our guys happened to be looking out the window when he saw the guy bringing (the ordnance) up the ramp,” Miller said.
Fire department officials asked the man to set the item on the ground to reduce the danger of an explosion.
Miller said he doesn’t know if the device poses any hazards, but he called experts with the 716th Explosive Ordnance Disposal company at Ft. Richardson in Anchorage and sent photos of the device for an opinion.
He said firefighters placed the item in a safe container away from residents, and he was waiting at press time to hear back on whether handling experts will come to Sitka to destroy or collect the device.
