F&G Taking Stock as Herring Harvest Nears
By Sentinel Staff
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has started aerial surveys in preparation for the upcoming Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery.
This year’s preliminary forecast for the quota is 8,712 tons based on a 19.7 percent harvest of a forecast mature biomass of 44,237 tons. This figure will be adjusted this week based on average-weight-at-age information from a winter sample taken March 2 and 3, department officials said.
Seiners have advised the department that they plan to fish cooperatively this year, with the proceeds shared among all permit holders. This method of fishing requires fewer seine boats on the fishing grounds, as well as fewer processors and tenders, reducing the overall cost of the harvest.
Dave Gordon, area management biologist, said an aerial survey last week showed high concentrations of sea lions near Inner Point and others off Bieli Rock. Whales were spotted among the large sea lion groups. He also reported sea lions off Mountain Point, Guide Island, Siginaka Island and off Lisianski Point, but little activity on the Halibut Point Road shoreline.
South of town, a few whales were seen west of Eastern Channel and the mouth of Silver Bay. In Salisbury Sound approximately 20 sea lions and one whale were spotted at the mouth of St. John Baptist Bay.
“The observed distribution of herring predators was normal for this date,” Gordon said in a news release.
A winter test fishery was held March 2 and 3, landing 53 tons of herring sold as bait. The department expects to adjust the sac roe forecast guideline harvest level based on the average weight-at-age from the winter sample. Gordon said he would announce the adjusted forecast today.
The department still plans to hold a pre-fishery organizational meeting, and put the fishery on two-hour notice – as usual – once “test sampling indicates increasing roe maturity.”
