LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
May 20
At 9:34 a.m. a caller asked for help dealing with a chicken problem.
A caller said he found his stolen bike but the person who took it was refusing to return it. Police are investigating.
At 12:47 p.m. a driver swerved toward a skateboarder on Katlian Street.
At 1:28 p.m. a bear was seen getting into garbage in the 4700 block of HPR. Police talked to the resident about cleaning up the trash.
A wallet was reported lost Friday.
Police are investigating a report of drug abuse.
Police received a domestic violence order to serve.
Officers issued a warning to people yelling in the 1300 block of SMC.
At 5:52 p.m. a resident reported a bear going into a shed in the 4700 block of HPR, then leaving and getting into neighbors’ garbage.
At 6:50 p.m. a caller complained people were arguing next to a campfire on Indian River Road. The people told police they had been talking loudly, not arguing.
At 7:50 p.m. police responded to a report of a ruckus on a porch on Orion Street, and made an arrest.
At 8:24 p.m. a man passed out in a laundromat was given a ride to the hospital. He was released early this morning, and his skipper agreed to take care of him for the night.
May 21
At 1:29 a.m. police checked on a report of a man being hit with a baseball bat, and issued disorderly conduct warnings to both people involved in the incident.
At 4:19 a.m. a caller said a bear was eating out of a neighbor’s garbage can in the 4700 block of HPR. The bear then crossed the road, went over the guardrail and into woods. When it returned to the neighborhood, police hit it with a less lethal ammo, and it went into the woods again.
Sitka Police
Thomas L. Reinholdt, 72, was arrested Wednesday for assault in the third degree, domestic violence, and assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence, for allegedly threatening someone with a rifle.
Christian F. Moe, 38, was arrested Wednesday for assault in the third degree for allegedly threatening someone with a knife.
Emergency Calls
The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 12:30, 1:55 and 8:32 p.m. Wednesday, and 1:39 a.m. today.
At 11:57 p.m. Wednesday firefighters put out a brush fire left unattended at the end of Smith Street.
Coast Guard
The Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter searched several areas of Southeast Sunday evening after an emergency locator beacon went off from a plane heading from Gustavus to Hoonah.
The source of the signal was traced to Hoonah, where the Alaska State Troopers plane had landed safely at the airport. The Coast Guard said there were no problems with the flight, but there had been a malfunctioning emergency locator beacon, which transmitted a signal even after it had been turned off.
