The Sitka High girls track team grabbed a first-place finish while the boys finished in second place in the Region V meet over the weekend in Juneau.
As a team, Sitka High will be sending 10 individuals and a handful of relay teams to the state meet in Anchorage this coming weekend. The Sitka girls placed first with 183 points, 39 points ahead of Petersburg, for the Region V title. The Vikings edged out Sitka for first place on the boys side by 29 points.
The Lady Wolves won all four relay events to go with four individual region champions. Ellie Cagle accounted for three of those first-place marks with wins in the 100 and 200 meter dash, and the high jump. Cagle also finished second in the long jump.

Mariyah Harrell grabbed the other first place, with a throw of 31’06.50” in the shot put.
Sitka High swept all four relay events. In the 4x100 Marlis Boord, Krina Sibayan, Madeline Quealey and Sophia Eastham came in at 57.69 for first place.
Sitka’s 4x200 team (Kamryn Dodson, Skyler Moore, Quealey and Eastham) finished a full 15 seconds ahead of the second place Petersburg squad; and Katie Holmgren, Boord, Madison Webb and Mary Pierce won the 4x400 meter relay by an even larger margin of nearly 35 seconds.
Daniela Artiomov, Ayla McNielly, Moore and Holmgren completed the sweep with the 4x800 relay, finishing with a time of 12:14.27.
All four relay teams qualified to go to the state championship as did all four of Sitka’s boys relay teams.
The boys won three of the four relay events but qualified all four teams.
Marjo Vidad, Daniel Wendell, Josh Goeden and Brandon Tulcey took the 4x100 relay with a 1.6 second win over the group from Thorne Bay.
In the 4x200, Jericho Villanueva, Tristan Rosas, Wendell and Goeden finished in first by over 3 seconds; and the 4x800 team (Jordan Zellhuber, Trevor Schoening, Kincaid Parsons and Colin Baciocco) finished well ahead of Petersburg for first place with a time of 9:04.88.
The boys also got three individual titles, all of which belonged to Brandon Tulcey. He won the 100 and 200 meter dash as well as the long jump.
Tulcey qualified for state in all three events. Other qualifiers for the boys team include Wendell in the 200 meter dash, Sage Widmier in the discus, Zellhuber in the 800 meter run, Tristan Rosas in the 400 meter dash, Goeden in the 100 and 200 meter dash, and Baciocco who finished second in the 1600 and 3200 meter run to qualify.
Cagle qualified in four events for the Sitka girls. In addition to the three events she won at Regionals she will also compete in the long jump at the state meet.
Harrell is in for both the shot put and discus and Madizon Kranz qualified in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.
The state finals this weekend will be at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
