Wolves Split with Juneau Teams, Softball Clinches State Bid
By Sentinel Staff
Two blowout wins and a pair of losses marked the last weekend of regular season play for the Sitka High baseball team as they hosted Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain Friday and Saturday.
Sitka opened the weekend with two blowouts of the Falcons. In the early game Friday Sitka freshman Vaughn Blankenship threw a 3-hit, 1-run game that ended in the sixth inning with the Wolves up 14-1. Sitka’s strong pitching bled over into game two when Kyle Fitzsimmons racked up five strikeouts in the first three innings alone.
Fitzsimmons finished with a complete game shutout gave the Wolves a 9-0 win.
The Wolves struggled on Saturday as their focus shifted to Juneau-Douglas. The Crimson Bears took both games from Sitka beginning with a 5-3 win in the afternoon game. The Wolves were shut out in the final contest of the weekend 9-0.
Juneau-Douglas pitcher Nathan Klein finished with 12 strikeouts, six of which came in the first two innings.
Sitka pitcher Trevan Coleman held Juneau-Douglas to 1 run through 3 innings before the Crimson Bears racked up six runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Juneau-Douglas scored 9 runs on 12 hits and Sitka dropped to 6-6 in the conference for the regular season.
Two teams earn bids to the state championship game in Anchorage. The Region tournament will be played in Juneau this coming weekend, and Sitka will need to knock off one of the top seeds – Juneau-Douglas or Ketchikan – in order to get a bid to the state tournament.
Softball
A split with Thunder Mountain in Juneau over the weekend helped Sitka High secure one of the two Southeast bids to the State Softball Tournament in June.
The Wolves improved to 7-3 in the conference after beating Thunder Mountain 9-3 on Saturday. Ketchikan sits in second place at 6-4 and Juneau-Douglas is still in the hunt at 5-5. Each team has two games left to sort out the regular season. Sitka can finish no worse than second in the region since it holds the tie-breaker over Juneau-Douglas.
The Wolves got off to a rough start to the weekend, losing 15-7 on Friday night. Thunder Mountain led by 1 after five innings but a grand slam by Thunder Mountain’s Macie Saceda-Hurt helped the Falcons stave off the rally.
On Saturday Elle Gray threw a complete game for Sitka, allowing 3 runs on 10 hits. Gray also registered 3 strikeouts in the game that ensured Sitka would be playing in Fairbanks for a state title.
The Wolves will play Ketchikan for the final series of the season. Kayhi needs one win to earn a state bid and a sweep to lock up the top Southeast seed. If Sitka wins both games it opens the door for Juneau-Douglas to make it to the state tournament.
