LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
June 25
At 7:44 a.m. police advised two people sleeping in an SUV at Eliason Harbor that they needed to relocate to a campground.
Police stood by while a man collected his belongings in compliance with a court order.
At 9:43 a.m. a caller said a driver in the 300 block of Lincoln Street nearly backed into her vehicle, screamed and yelled at her, and sped off. Police advised the driver of the complaint.
At 11:09 a.m. a caller complained about dump trucks speeding from the Yaw Drive quarry onto Indian River Road.
At 1 p.m. an intoxicated person was reported stumbling in the 2000 block of HPR.
At 3:31 p.m. a woman asked for police advice on handling items she had been storing for a resident who had since died.
A resident reported losing his blue and white wallet with a hibiscus design on it, and Hawaii ID, a veterans card and credit cards inside.
At 11:06 p.m. a woman asked what her rights were in relation to her live-in boyfriend who was using abusive language toward her. Police talked to the two, who agreed to separate for the night and discuss their problems when sober. Police received a second call at 12:08 a.m. reporting the boyfriend was being threatening toward the woman. He received a disorderly conduct warning and agreed to go to bed.
At 11:25 a.m. a bear was reported dragged a trash container into the 4700 block of HPR. Police put the container back, but the bear was gone.
June 26
At 4:08 a.m. a resident said his company’s vehicle’s windshield had been damaged on Vitskari Street.
Emergency Calls
The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 9:40 a.m., 2:05 p.m. and 4:44 p.m. Thursday; and 2:02 a.m. today.
Coast Guard
The Coast Guard Air Station Sitka launched a helicopter this morning to search for an overdue vessel with three people on board on the south coast of Prince of Wales Island.
The Coast Guard said the 24-foot pleasure craft was due back Wednesday or Thursday from a cruise from Ketchikan to Nichols Bay. Family called the Coast Guard when the vessel didn’t return as expected, the Coast Guard said.
The search was still under way at press time today.
In other calls, the Coast Guard launched following a plane crash near Ketchikan (see story, Page 1), but the helicopter was called back soon after.
Early this morning, the Coast Guard helicopter medevacked a 54-year man with head and neck injuries, from Klawock to Sitka.
