Murkowski Protests GE Fish Ruling
By Sentinel Staff
Sen. Lisa Murkowski announced today that in retaliation for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of genetically engineered fish for human consumption she will place a hold on the Senate confirmation of Dr. Robert Califf as the next FDA commissioner.
In a statement released by her office Murkowski said she plans to push back against the FDA decision by advancing her efforts for mandatory labeling of GE fish, and also by blocking Califf’s appointment to head the agency.
She said her decision on the nomination “is due to the lack of cooperation and communication from the FDA surrounding their announcement to approve GE salmon.” FDA made the announcement approving GE fish last Thursday.
“I will not stand back and just watch these genetically engineered creatures be placed in our kitchens and on our tables without a fight,” Murkowski said in the statement. “I am furious about this decision, but now I must do everything I can to make sure it is labeled –consumers have a right to know what it is they are eating. Genetically modifying salmon is messing with nature’s perfect brain food. The real thing is not only the safe choice, but it’s the best thing.”
She said she plans to stand by Costco, Target, Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and all other grocery stores that are refusing to stock GE salmon.
If confirmed by the Senate Califf will replace Dr. Stephen Ostroff, acting commissioner of the FDA since Dr. Margaret Hamberg stepped down earlier this year. Califf was nominated by President Obama on Sept. 15.
FDA approval of the genetically engineered fish for human consumption comes five years after the agency announced that its tests had found the fish to be safe for human consumption, and three years after it announced additional research indicating the fish would cause no harm to the environment.
The genetically-modified salmon grows twice as fast as unmodified Atlantic salmon.
