Wolves Win in 2nd Battle of the Bridge
By Sentinel Staff
Sitka High won on both sides of the O’Connell Bridge this weekend, with the girls basketball team winning at Mt. Edgecumbe while the Sitka High boys evened the season series against the Braves at home.
The Sitka girls are now 2-0 over Mt. Edgecumbe for the season after winning 49-41, Friday night. In their first meeting, the Wolves needed a late 3-point play by Marlis Boord to scratch out the 1-point win. This time out, Sitka took a 13-10 lead in the first quarter and carried it throughout the contest.
At the end of the first half the Wolves led by 9 points. They extended that lead to 14 heading into the fourth quarter. The defending state champions get Cordova next week before they see Mt. Edgecumbe again on Feb. 23, while the Braves will be playing Ketchikan at home this weekend.
Southeast’s lone state tournament berth will be decided by a three-game series between Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe during the region tournament in March.
The Alaska Schools Activities Association’s first ranking of teams by the Winning Percentage Index, which lists teams by strength of schedule and wins, was released last Wednesday. The Sitka High girls were ranked fifth based on their December and January games, and Mt. Edgecumbe was ranked seventh.
The top team by WPI who didn’t win their region title will receive an at-large bid to the state tournament. Had the rule been in place last season, both Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe would have played in the state tournament.
On the Sitka-side of the bridge, the boys team got its first win over Mt. Edgecumbe this season, beating the Braves 57-30. Sitka lost by 7 points in their first meeting in January, but returned several players who were out during that contest.
Tevin Bayne led the Wolves with 22 points in a game in which Sitka jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the second quarter. Seven different players scored for Sitka.
Bobby Pate was the Brave’s top scorer with 15 points. Mt. Edgecumbe will play Ketchikan at home this weekend. The Sitka High boys are off until next week, when they play Cordova here.
The remaining regular season games between these two teams will be played at Mt. Edgecumbe High School. The Braves are ahead of Sitka in the first WPI rankings. Mt. Edgecumbe sits at seventh in the state while the Wolves are in 10th place. Barrow, who is the defending state champion in 3A, is ranked number one in the state.
