The action starts Wednesday at 8 a.m.
And while most Sitka basketball fans will spend the next few days with their ears to the radio (or eyes on a computer screen) as Sitka High and Mt. Edgecumbe battle for Southeast titles and state berths, there will be a host of games on Japonski Island.
The 2A Region V tournament will open Wednesday at MEHS, with 14 Southeast teams here to battle for trips to state.
In the eight-team boys bracket, Yakutat is the top seed. Klawock, Angoon, Hoonah, Hydaburg, Kake, Thorne Bay and Skagway are also in the field.
Angoon and Hydaburg traveled to Sitka with some unfinished business: two conference games. The conference games between the schools were cancelled earlier this season because of foul weather and the teams asked if they could play the games in Sitka, prior to the 2A tournament.
The two teams met Monday night at the Hames Athletic and Wellness Center, with Hydaburg taking the game. The regional rivals were expected to play again tonight on the former Sheldon Jackson College floor.
The 2A Region V boys action will begin at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. The top two Southeast boys teams will advance to the 2A state tournament. The Point Hope Harpooners have won the last three state titles in the 2A division.
Yakutat won a 2A state title in 2006. The last two years, Klawock has lost to Point Hope in the state championship game.
There are six teams in the girls 2A Region V bracket, including two-time defending state champ Skagway. The Lady Panthers are seeded third and will play six-seeded Hoonah Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Klawock is the top girls seed, with Yakutat seeded second. Thorne Bay and Angoon are also in the tournament.
Southeast has won the last five 2A girls state titles. Prior to Skagway’s two-year run, Yakutat won three straight titles, a streak that began in 2007.
Yakutat lost in the state championship game to Skagway in 2011.
Tickets for the 2A tournament are available at the gym and the Mt. Edgecumbe office, which also has more information about scheduling.
The girls championship game is set for 6:15 p.m. Friday, with the boys final at 8 p.m. The consolation finals are Saturday.
