MEHS Braves Make State, Girls Fall to Craig

KETCHIKAN – The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves are headed back to the state tournament. A day after losing to Sitka High in the 3A Region V boys championship game, the Braves rebounded to beat Metlakatla 59-47 to earn Southeast's second state berth.

The Braves scored the game's first bucket and never trailed. Cody Sherman and Jaylin Prince scored 15 points each, Kacy Green had 13, Leo Ford scored 7 and Dominique Hall chipped in 7 of his own.

The Lady Braves, meanwhile, had their season end in the state play-in game Saturday. After losing in the opening round to Metlakatla, the Lady Braves ran off three straight wins, including a 53-47 victory over the Miss Chiefs Saturday morning that kept the MEHS girls alive for a state berth.

But the Craig Lady Panthers ended the MEHS run. The Lady Braves were up 32-22 at the half, but Craig got back into the game in the third quarter and put the Lady Braves away late. Maggie Dinon had 20 to lead Craig, while Melissa Castle and Jeneata Johnson scored 11 each and Katie Dinon had 10. Brandi Hale had 17 to lead MEHS.
