Fishing for Herring Gets Underway

Seiners scooped up 4,700 tons of herring Saturday afternoon in the first opening of the Sitka Sound sac roe fishery.
The opening was held at the north end of Sitka Sound at Hayward Strait area.
Another opening was called for 11:30 a.m. today in the same area.
Saturday’s opening started at 2:30 p.m. and was closed by field order at 5:56 p.m. No information was given on roe percentages.
Fish and Game reported 1.4 miles of active spawn Saturday on Middle Island and Crow Island. A chart distributed from Sunday’s aerial survey showed spawn activity continuing in those areas and expanding to Siginaka Island, the Gavanskis, Lisianski Peninsula, the Chaichei group and the shores of Hayward Strait.
The guideline harvest level this year is 28,829 tons. The Fish and Game fishery managers were on the fishing grounds at press time today and unavailable for comment.
