Elsie Mae (White) Young ‘‘passed away into the arms of our Heavenly Father’’ on Sept. 13, 2008, at Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nev., with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. She was born on March 24, 1929, in Kelso, Wash., to Russell and Iva White. She attended schools in Kelso and worked as a telephone operator and later at Tobiason’s Variety Store in Longview. She married her husband of 60 years, Philip E. Young, on Aug. 8, 1947. They had three children. In 1967 they moved their family to Sitka where she went to work for Lakeside Grocery, APC Commissary, Russian Bell Jewelry and The Cellar. After retiring in 1987 she and her husband moved to Seaview, Wash. There they spent their time remodeling their 100-year-old home, attending St. Mary’s Catholic Church and volunteering at St. Vincent De Paul. In December 2004 they moved to Silver Springs, Nev., to be closer to their family. They missed the ocean, the fresh seafood and their many friends. She loved her family and enjoyed being a nana to her nine great-grandchildren. ‘‘We’ll all miss her cooking and her baking that she enjoyed doing,’’ her family wrote. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Philip, in January of this year; by her parents; her brother Vern White; daughter Debbie Young; son Mike Young; and grandson Jesse Heim. She’s survived by her daughter and son-in-law Terri and Doug Karpstein of Reno; her grandchildren, Krista Lutes, Keith (Amy) Karpstein, Kori Karpstein, Kallie (John) Jokela, all of Reno, Zachary Heim of Juneau, Sarah (Jason) Young, Travis Miller and Corrine Young of Scio, Ore.; great-grandchildren Brieanna, Neriah, Hailey, Alissa, Emma, Ashley and Dillon, all of Reno, Dylan and Savannah of Scio; brother and sister-in-law Raymond and Mary White of Oro Valley, Ariz., and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Cremation was handled by Truckee Meadows Cremation & Burial in Reno, and she will be laid to rest in Kelso, Wash., at Green Hills Memorial Gardens with her husband, daughter, son and grandson.
