By Sentinel Staff
A tall tree snag caught fire and burned down in Sitka National Historical Park Monday afternoon, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said today.
Cause of the fire is unknown, he said.

The blaze, about 100 feet from Sawmill Creek Road bike path on the side of the park near Arrowhead Trailer Court, was reported at 4 p.m. Monday. A fire engine and about a dozen firefighters responded and the fire was out in about an hour and a half, Warren said. Wind blew embers onto four or so other decayed downed trees, and they burned also, Warren said.
“Rain hadn’t gotten through the canopy of trees, and it was pretty dry under there,” the chief said.
The fire department checked during the night to make sure the fire was out, and Warren said he would look over the area today.
