Planning Board Looks At Fine-Tuning Data

Planning Commission members held their first meeting of the year Jan. 15, electing officers and discussing the 2023 Annual Short-Term Rental Report and Sitka General Code Title 21 and 22 amendments.
Darrell Windsor and Catherine Riley were re-elected unanimously as chair and vice-chair, respectively.
The Annual Short-Term Rental Report includes information such as the total number of permits issued and total implied revenue from short-term rental establishments in Sitka.
As city staff began compiling the 2024 report, commission members suggested adding a requirement to the conditional use permits of older short-term rentals, which did not required them to fill out an annual report form. Staff will ascertain the number of establishments not reporting and inform the commission at a later date.
In the amendments discussion, commission members set the goal of correcting discrepancies and unclear definitions in the code. For example, an immediate concern was defining the different types of transient housing and establishing regulations that provide housing to temporary workers while maintaining the integrity of Sitka’s year-round residential areas. Staff was tasked with providing clear definitions for a more in-depth discussion in the future.
The commission also will review the definition of commercial-use docks, including the possibility of creating a new classification for commercial docks over a certain size. That discussion is scheduled for the first week of March.
