An SUV was destroyed in an impressive fire in the 1500 block of Halibut Point Road Saturday afternoon. The two occupants escaped uninjured, and firefighters quickly put out the flames.
The Sitka Fire Department received the report of the fire just after 4:40 p.m., and dispatched a fire truck and ambulance at 4:46 p.m. The two people in the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse had pulled into a driveway after the car caught fire.

A nearby resident, who was at her window, saw a police car stopping southbound cars on the highway and sending them back the way they came. When she went to a side window facing town, she saw a vehicle in the driveway with the engine compartment engulfed in flames and no one around it. She could hear sirens of the approaching emergency vehicles.
Seven firefighters responded to the tone-out on the fire, and put out the flames within three minutes, using the hoses from engine no. 3, the Fire Department said.
Police blocked off the area where rescuers were working, and turned vehicles around as they approached from both directions on Halibut Point Road.
The Fire Department reported the clear by 5:10 p.m.
