Card of Thanks

I would like to say a big thank you to my son David and daughter Millie for keeping friends and family informed, when I had to be medevacked two weekends ago.

Things were so hectic we had no time to do anything but run nonstop. Thank you to: our 3 South staff; Dr. Hahn; Megan (my physical therapist); Guardian Flight crew; my husband Franklin, who cares for me daily; my brother Chana and his wife, Jada, for talking to me and my family (he is so wise); my sister-in-law Rose for checking with Dave daily (I had no cell phones up there); the surgeons in ANMC were super.

Thank you to everyone who prayed. God is an awesome God. I am going to change my ways now. I will be kinder to Frank and everyone. God bless you all.

Ninth Infantry

Re-Enactors Sought

For the July 4 parade, Steve Dalquist is enlisting men for Sitka Ninth Infantry to simulate the newly arrived American forces of 1867 who marched through the streets of New Archangel and up the hill to the governor’s residence for the historical Oct. 18, 1867, transfer of Alaska from Russian claim to the United States at Sitka.

Dalquist invites anyone interested in post-Civil War 1860s American military uniforms and black powder weapons to call him at 752-0750 or 747-4835. Youths who could carry a drum or guidon (flag) are also welcome.

Assistance with costumes and weapons is available from Dalquist and others.

Sitka Summer Music Festival musicians will perform at the Larkspur Café 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17.

Violinist Kurt Nikkanen, violist Scott Rawls and cellist Zuill Bailey will perform a Mozart Divertimento. More information is available at sitkamusicfestival.org.

Bach’s Lunch

The Sitka Summer Music Festival will present a free lunchtime concert 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Centennial Hall.

Violinist Kurt Nikkanen, violist Scott Rawls and cellist Zuill Bailey will perform the Bach Goldberg Variations for String Trio. More information is at sitkamusicfestival.org

Movie Night Set

The Sitka Summer Music Festival will present the musical movie ‘‘Before Sunrise’’ 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at UAS-Sitka Campus, Room 229.

It stars Ethan Hawke as a young man who has a brief but intense romance in Vienna. The score is filled with classical masterworks, including a portion of the Bach Goldberg Variations. The film is rated R. Admission is free; however, donations are appreciated.

Evening Concerts

Set June 19-20

A Beethoven String Trio and a Brahms Piano Trio will be presented by the Sitka Summer Music Festival 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Centennial Hall.

On Saturday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. pianist Natasha Paremski will perform a Beethoven Piano Sonata. A Brahms Piano Quartet is also on the program.

The pre-concert conversations are at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books, online at sitkamusicfestival.org, or at the door.

Boat Cruise

Set for SSMF

All are invited to hop on board an Allen Marine catarmaran Sunday, June 21, for an evening cruise with the Sitka Summer Music Festival.

In the midst of the three-hour cruise, the captain will silence the engines and festival musicians will perform. The ticket includes a catered buffet from Ludvig’s. The boat departs Crescent Harbor at 6 p.m. Tickets are limited, and available at Old Harbor Books, online at sitkamusicfestival.org, or by calling 747-6774.

Library to Close

For Upgrades

Kettleson Memorial Library will be closed to the public Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, as it completes the technology changes necessary to join Alaska’s Joint Library Consortium.

Regular hours are scheduled to resume on Saturday, June 20.

‘‘We apologize for any inconvenience as this cost-saving and service-increasing move is implemented,’’ the library said.

Men Given

Health Month

Reminder

SEARHC will join health organizations across the country this month in recognizing Men’s Health Month.

The goal each June is to encourage men and boys to take care of their health and to heighten the public’s awareness of the many preventable health problems that affect men and their families.

“On average, men live about five years less than their female counterparts,’’ said Martha Pearson, Health Promotion Director at SEARHC. ‘‘With preventive maintenance, though, many deadly conditions can be detected and stopped.”

Pearson said that there is a lot that men can do to improve their health. Screening tests for heart problems as well as colon, prostate, lung and testicular cancer can give everyone the information they need to be successful.

Outside the clinic visit, men can also improve their health with the support of family and friends. Avoiding tobacco, improving their diet, increasing physical activity, and teaching young boys the value of healthy living will increase the chances of a long and disability-free life, Pearson said.

SEARHC encourages Southeast Alaskan men to take the steps necessary to live healthier and longer, and to make an appointment with their provider for preventive maintenance.

History Fans

Get Invitation

Sitka National Historical Park is once again offering ranger-led walking tours of downtown Sitka.

‘‘We have good news for those interested in exploring and preserving the history of the area,’’ the park said. ‘‘This is a great opportunity to visit – or revisit – the historic Russian-American sites of Sitka and learn about their significance to the history of Sitka and Alaska.’’

Tours continue throughout the summer. Schedules will be posted at the park, in the Sitka Sentinel, and on the Facebook page. 

Organist to Play

Kessler Organ

Karen Bretz will play the 1844 Kessler organ at Sitka Lutheran Church noon June 19, 20, 22 and 23.

Sitka Lutheran is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year. To help commemorate the event, Bretz will play music reflecting the church’s Scandinavian Lutheran heritage, as well as music from the Spanish Renaissance and the French Romantics.

The Kessler organ was manufactured in Estonia in 1844 and shipped to Sitka in 1846. It is a five stop tracker organ with a single manual and no pedal board. It is likely the oldest existing pipe organ west of the Mississippi River, the church said. 

Bretz is an Anchorage attorney and the organist at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

Sitka Branding

Project Presented 

The Sitka Chamber of Commerce weekly luncheon will be held noon Wednesday at the Westmark Sitka. Tonia Rioux of the Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau will present the Sitka Branding Project and marketing outlook.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the presentation will begin at noon.

On June 24, Sen. Bert Stedman will be the speaker.

Starting in July, weekly luncheons will be canceled until further notice because of staffing changes.

Get Measles

Vaccination

Because of the recent case of measles being reported in Fairbanks, the Sitka Public Health Center says that now is a good time for parents to check their child’s measles, mumps and rubella vaccine status.  

Children can get their first MMR vaccine at one year, and should have their second vaccine by school age, the center said.

‘‘Measles can be a serious illness, is extremely contagious, and is vaccine preventable,’’ the health center said.

Sitkans Sought

For SAFV Survey

Sitkans Against Family Violence invites the public to participate in an anonymous survey between June 16 and 30.

The survey is available online at www.safv.org or in paper format at the SAFV office and Kettleson Memorial Library. Call Martina at 747-3370 to have one mailed. On July 1, a drawing for four $50 Sea Mart gift certificates will be held for those who complete the survey. 

The 10-minute survey will inform the program-planning group in how to provide the best-possible services to fulfill SAFV’s vision of “safety, respect, community,” SAFV said.

The results will be be posted on the SAFV website.
