Carolyn Ann Carle
Carolyn Ann Carle passed away in Sitka on November 5, 2022, at age 75.
Carolyn was born August 5, 1948, in Dillingham, the second eldest child of Herbert and Anna (Peterson) Smith. She was raised in Seward. After the 1964 Alaskan earthquake, in which tidal waves carried off the family home, she graduated from William H. Seward High School.
Following graduation, she joined the U.S. Navy. She later married Ernie Schaffran and had one son, Shon. Later in life she moved to Sitka, which has very much been her home ever since.
If you met Carolyn, you would never forget her. To many people, she was known as Big Carol. She enjoyed singing, friends, classic TV and movies, playing bingo and Yahtzee.
A true Alaskan Character, she will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, younger brother Olaf Smith, and younger sister, Donna Jean Caldwell.
Carolyn is survived by her son Shon Schaffran, grandson Uriah Schaffran, and daughter-in-law Claudia “Sanae” Schaffran, as well as her beloved cat Mushy.
Carolyn also is survived by her older brother, Edward (Ed) and sister-in-law Rose Smith of Wasilla, and several nieces and extended family.
A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, November 12, at the Sheet’ka Kwan Naa Kahidi house. All who knew and loved Carolyn are invited to attend.
After the service will be some shared food and a potluck. Feel free to bring a dish or dessert.
