Former longtime Sitka resident Ada Lennette Wilkin passed away on Sept. 1, 2014, in Pacific, Wash..
Ada was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Minto, Alaska, to James W. Bruce and Elise Nova Huntington Bruce James.
She was adopted by Dr. Walter Sobeloff and given the Tlingit name ShaXee’dee.
She was raised in Nenana until August 1945, when she and her seven siblings moved to Anchorage where they attended Eklutna School.
In 1946 the family moved to Japonski Island where Ada attended Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Her mother worked for the Public Health Service’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital until she retired.
Ada met Richard T. Wilkin in Sitka, and they were married in June 1956.
Ada was a Certified Nurses Aide at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, and a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, especially baking home-made bread to go with her chili; big family gatherings; spending time with her grandchildren; and knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include sisters Virginia Palmer (Everett, Wa), Shirley Yocum, Carol Goddard and Marty Barker (Pat) all of Sitka AK, brother David James (Renee) of Wasilla AK and 10 children, step son Rick Wilkin, (Linda) their children Corey, Stephen(d), Nicole and Jamie all of Salmon WA; Bernadette Bruce daughters Charidy (Micah) and Vicki all of Auburn WA; Vicki Webb (Tom) sons Tommy (Ashley) and Richard (Sabrina) all of Sparks NV; Lori Stedman (Mike) sons Jakob (Rachel) and Matt all of Juneau AK,; Richard T. Wilkin III of Pacific, WA; Lennette Harlin (Ron) daughters Mary and Lisa Weed of Kelso, WA; Arnold Wilkin, of Pacific Wa, son Tyler; Ruby Delach her children Christopher, Samantha and Anna all of Poulsbo WA, Tammy Mears (Tim) sons James and Michael of Sitka; Robert Wilkin son Robert Jr and daughter Brenda all of Hoonah; 23 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Ada was preceded in death by her mother Elise Huntington James; father James Bruce; brothers James and Herbert Bruce; and sisters Marion (Mimi) Donthnier and Alrene (Beannie) Wolf.
She will be greatly missed by her family and loved ones. Family members are very thankful for all the condolences and payers that have been received from many family friends.
To honor Ada’s wishes there will be no services; however, the family will have a memorial to celebrate her life both in Pacific, Wash., and Sitka.
