Charitable Trust Grant Applications Available

By Sentinel Staff

The Sitka Alaska Charitable Trust is accepting applications for the 2022 round of grants for scientific, educational and social betterment.

Applications will be accepted through April 16. The website for applications is https://www.wellsfargo.com/private-foundations/sitka-alaska-permanent-charitable-trust

Grant awards are decided by the seven-member SAPCT Board of Advisers, which will meet at 5 p.m. May 18 in the Sitka High School library to hear presentations by grant applicants. The board will meet again on May 19 to review applications and make decisions on awards. Both meetings will be open to the public.

Applications are submitted online to a national web address of Wells Fargo Bank, which is the SAPCT trustee and fund manager. The bank is a conduit in the routing of applications to the trust’s board of advisers, but doesn’t have a role in deciding the awards, which are made under guidelines of the 1995 trust document.

The Sitka-based SAPCT board of has set the distribution amount for this year’s grants at $105,806, based on the fund’s asset value of $2,645,154 on Dec. 31, 2021.

Since 1995, when it was established by Alaska Pulp Corp., the SAPCT has been making annual grants to Sitka nonprofits and educational organizations, and continues to be the largest charitable foundation in Sitka.

In recent years Wells Fargo Bank, as trustee, has taken a more active role in the administration of the trust. One effect of that change has been to discontinue the process of the previous 25 years in which grant applications were submitted to a Sitka address. The SAPCT website www.sitkacharitabletrust.org is still up, and while information about the history and the mission of the trust are still available there, the dates for applications and awards are not current for this year.

Board president Thad Poulson said work is underway to update the site and provide an easily accessible link to the Wells Fargo application portal. In the meantime, Poulson said, questions can be addressed to him at This email address is being protected from spambots.
