Meeting Set
All community members are invited to attend a meeting of the ad hoc committee working on the creation of the Sitka Community Greenhouse and Education Center 5 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Unitarian Hall, 408 Marine Street.
The scope of the project will be reviewed and possible locations evaluated. For more information call 752-0654.
Unitarians Meet
Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship program will be “Festivals of Light,” a look at celebrations of the winter solstice around the world.
Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45. Children’s religious education is provided. Soup and bread follows the program at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.
Climbing Wall
Hours Added
The climbing wall at the Hames Center is now open three days a week.
Youths and adults are invited to climb, traverse or boulder the wall 4:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays. A slack line is available to practice balance. All gear is provided.

Free Family Event
Set at SJ Museum
Sheldon Jackson Museum will host its free, family-friendly At Saxan third Saturday program Dec. 21. Participants will learn about petroglyphs and pictographs of Southeast Alaska and Cape Alitak in Kodiak and make their own petroglyph using plaster of paris. The program is best for ages 6-10 and is free, but space is limited. Call 747-8981 to register a child.

Math Materials
For Public View
Blatchley Middle School has received samples of math materials and they are available for public view.
Materials may be adopted for the school’s instructional use. Those wanting to view the material can stop by the Blatchley office.
Heifer International
Bake Sale Slated
Holiday baked goods are being sold 11:30 a.m. Dec. 21 at re:fresh, located in the lower level of the Westmark Sitka, to help raise money to purchase a camel for Heifer International.

NATIVITY DISPLAY – The Sitka United Methodist Church preschool Sunday school class looks at an Andy’s Rascal nativity set of children dressed up in nativity costumes. The handmade clay set was donated by Hide Tsutakawa of Spokane, Wash., who learned about the church’s annual Silent Night Nativity Set display event and wanted to add to the collection. This and other sets will be at the Sitka United Methodist Church, 303 Kimsham Street, 5-7 p.m. today and Saturday and 4:30-7 p.m. Sunday. A wide variety of nativity sets, including those from other countries and handmade ones, will be included. All are invited to view the sets and join others for cider and cookies. Manger scene costumes will be available for children to wear who would like their photo taken on Friday and Saturday night. Parents are reminded to take their own cameras. The wreath-laying ceremony to be conducted by the cadets of the Civil Air Patrol Baranof Composite Squadron has been postponed to noon Dec. 21 at the National Cemetery.

Blue Christmas
Event Dec. 20
Sitka Lutheran Church will open its sanctuary 5-7 p.m. Dec. 20 for the annual Blue Christmas event.
‘‘We are about to experience the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Some experience as ‘the dark night of the soul,’ or ‘the winter of our discontent,’’’ Sitka Lutheran said. ‘‘This time of year can bring back memories of past pain and sorrow or highlight and heighten new experiences of loss. For many this time of year, that we call the holiday season, is no holiday at all.’’
Attendees are invited to meditate, pray, listen to beautiful music, read through stories and hymns, and light a candle of remembrance and hope.
Christmas Eve
Worship Offered
Sitka Lutheran Church will hold worship services at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.
The 5 p.m. service will be more family oriented. The 11 p.m. will be a joint celebration with St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Both services will be candlelit and serve Holy Communion. All are welcome.
