Closure Noted
Blue Lake Road is closed and will remain closed until the end of construction on the Blue Lake Dam. Heavy equipment will be on the road.
The road will re-open in the spring of 2015. Public tours will be conducted April-July. For more information visit www.bluelakeexpansion.com.

To Meet Jan. 8
The White Elephant Shop monthly meeting will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the Swan Lake Senior Center. Meetings are open to the public.
Basketball Tourney
At Mt. Edgecumbe
The 8th Annual Mt. Edgecumbe Invitational Basketball Tournament is scheduled Jan. 15-18 at the BJ McGillis Gymnasium on the MEHS campus.
Action starts 6 p.m. Wednesday and will continue all day Thursday through Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. each day.
Twenty teams from across Alaska – including Anchorage, Juneau, Haines, Metlakatla, Ketchikan, Juneau, Hoonah, Petersburg, Kake, Klawock and Sitka – are planning to participate.
Admission may be paid at the door or passes are being sold at the MEHS front office. Admission prices are: adult tournament pass $30; senior tournament pass $20; family tournament pass $50; and day passes are $10-$15.
Event sponsors are Schmolck Mechanical, Sitka Bottling Co., McDonald’s of Sitka, Sitka CHARR, ASRC McGraw Constructors, Shee Atika Inc., Totem Square Inn and Delta Western.
Teen Advisory
Board to Meet
Kettleson Memorial Library’s Teen Advisory Board will meet 7 p.m. Jan. 10.
TAB members help select materials for the library’s collection and will make suggestions for the future teen area at the new library. Teens 13 and up are invited to join the board. Registration is preferred. Snacks and pizza are included.

Violence Discussed
The Domestic and Sexual Violence Task Force meeting is scheduled noon-1 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Sitka Community Hospital classroom. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call SAFV at 747-3370.
Emblem Club
To Meet Jan. 9
Sitka Emblem Club will hold an April 2014 convention planning meeting 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Sitka Elks Lodge.
The regular business meeting will follow at 7 p.m. Members are being encouraged to attend. Several projects are ongoing for the convention and helpers are needed, the club said. All members are being asked to attend.
Fish and Game
Panel to Meet
The Sitka Fish and Game Advisory Committee will meet 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the classroom of the Sage Building at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
Business will include election of officers, framing proposals for the next board cycle, and other issues that may emerge.

Blatchley pool is closed until further notice. Parts have been ordered and have yet to arrive.

Gilbert Kuhnle,
Longtime Sitkan,
Dies in Olympia
Former longtime Sitka resident, Gilbert “Gib” Kuhnle, passed away on Jan. 1, 2014, at the age of 91, at his home in Olympia, Wash., surrounded by his children.
Gib and his wife, Betty, moved their family to Sitka in 1960 from Shelton, Wash. He was employed at Alaska Lumber and Pulp as a tug boat operator until 1983, when he retired and moved to Olympia.
He is survived by his five children, Carol, Gary, Sue, Sherri and Albert. Alaska held many fond memories for him, his family said. He rarely missed the annual Washington Sitka picnic.

School Board Meets
The Sitka School Board will hold a regular school board meeting 7 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Sitka High School library.
Prior to the meeting the board will hold a work session on ‘‘Budget 101; Five-Year Strategic Budget.’’
The board will also meet in executive session to discuss the superintendent’s evaluation. The public is being encouraged to attend.
