Monthly Grind
Set for Saturday
Sitka Monthly Grind and Greater Sitka Arts Council announce the Artigras Grind to be March 15 at the Performing Arts Center.
The theme will be original works of art by Sitka musicians. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Old Harbor Books.
Fireman’s Ball
Set for March 28
Tenakee Springs 28th annual Fireman’s Ball is slated 5 p.m. March 28 at the Tenakee Springs Community Center.
Spaghetti will be served at 5 p.m. All are invited to take a dessert or salad to share. Live music will be played. Door prizes will be offered. Admission is $10 for adults, ages 5-12, $5, and under 5, free.
All proceeds support the Tenakee Springs volunteer fire department.
Herring Panel Meets
Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Herring Committee will meet 7 p.m. March 11 at 429 Katlian Street. The meeting is open to the public. Questions can be directed to 747-7168.
Kids’ Herring
Derby Slated
Sitka Herring Festival will host a kids’ herring derby March 23-April 4.
Donated prizes will be awarded for largest herring in different age groups. Weigh-ins will be at 429 Katlian on weekdays 5-7 p.m., and at Thomsen Harbor on weekends 5-7 p.m.

Affordable Care
Act Discussed
Raven Radio will host a live call-in show on the Affordable Care Act, 10 a.m.-noon March 12.
The deadline to enroll in health insurance through the ACA is March 31. SEARHC outreach manager Andrea Thomas will be at the studio to answer questions about enrolling in a health insurance plan, qualifying for subsidies and submitting waivers.

Discovery Days
At Science Center
The 10 a.m. March 15 Discovery Days event at the Sitka Sound Science Center will explore plants and how they provide air, food and medicine.
Discovery Days are annual pass holders events, but passes are available at the door.
Men’s Bible
Study on Tap
Calvary Chapel men’s Bible study will show the soon-to-be-released 30-minute DVD “Noah the Movie,” featuring Ray Comfort, 7 p.m. March 11 at the Learning Center, 1547 Sawmill Creek Rd.
A time of prayer will follow the movie. The event is for men only. The women’s group meets at 10 a.m. Saturdays.

Meeting Slated
The White Elephant Shop monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. March 12 at the Swan Lake Senior Center. Meetings are open to all interested.
Shakespeare
Marathon Set
A Shakespeare marathon, a Bard-a-thon, is being held at Kettleson Memorial Library noon-9 p.m. daily March 10-15. Today, it will run until 9 p.m.
Juneau Public Library is hosting the event via videoconference. Sitkans are welcome to listen or participate as Shakespeare’s plays are read aloud.
The event is to celebrate Shakespeare’s 450th birthday.
Read-a-Thon Set
At Kettleson Library
‘‘Snuggle Up with a Good Book” is a family read-a-thon to be held 5-8 p.m. March 14 at Kettleson Memorial Library.
All are invited at any time during the event. ‘‘Jammies and pillows’’ are welcome, library personnel said.
Chicken soup will be served at 6 p.m. Mr. Joe will sing children’s songs at 7 p.m.
The readathon is sponsored by Friends of Kettleson Memorial Library. Interested families may pick up pledge sheets at the library or download them off the library website. Families are welcome to participate with or without the pledge sheet.
Book Signing
Set at Library
Don Rearden, author of ‘‘Raven’s Gift,’’ will give a reading and sign books 6 p.m. March 12 at Kettleson Memorial Library.
‘‘Raven’s Gift’’ is Rearden’s debut novel and has been received with wide acclaim, the library said.
The book is a “hunter-hunted suspense of Geoffrey Household’s ‘Rogue Male,’ the post-apocalyptic bleakness of Cormac McCarthy’s ‘The Road’ and the haunting mysteriousness of ‘The X-Files.’” It is set in windswept Alaskan tundra.
