Clothesline Project

Set For Saturday

The Clothesline Project will be held at UAS-Sitka Campus 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to participate in the storytelling exercise.

Women – or their loved ones – who have been the victims of violence or abuse are provided shirts to decorate with words or images that tell their story, share their inspiration, show solidarity, or commemorate their losses and victories.

More than one-third of Alaskan Native women are beaten or raped in their lifetimes – about twice the rate of the nation as a whole, Sitkans Against Family Violence reports.

UAS and SAFV will host the event. Shirts and art supplies will be provided, or people can take their own shirts to decorate. After being decorated, shirts then will be added to the Clothesline Project display in the lobby at UAS. The display will be moved to Kettleson Memorial Library for display during the remaining two weeks of October, which is Family Violence Awareness Month.

Seward House Museum Staff

To Give Alaska Day Programs

In observance of Alaska Day, Sitka National Historical Park will host two special programs on William Seward, who negotiated the United States’ purchase of Alaska claims from Russia.

Mitch Maniccia, a representative from Seward House Museum, in Albany, N.Y., will present the programs.

He will give the backstory of what made Seward the representative of peaceful American expansion in the 19th century, as well as the tale of his successful procurement and exploration of the rich and expansive territory of Alaska.

‘‘Manifesting a Destiny: William Seward and the Alaska Purchase’’ will be presented 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the park visitor center.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon ‘‘Flip or Flop? William Seward and the Purchase of Alaska’’ will be presented in the visitor center.

The Seward House staff will present more about Seward and the purchase of Alaska. Interactive displays will give participants the opportunity to explore the Alaska purchase and decide if it really was a folly or not, the park said.

The family-friendly event is for all ages.
