SF Symphony

Brass to Perform

The world-renowned San Francisco Symphony Brass Section and friends will perform 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, for the annual Holiday Brass Concert.

The 10-piece brass ensemble will fill the Sitka Performing Arts Center with the sounds of the holiday season playing a variety of classical and traditional music.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students and seniors, and are available at Old Harbor Books. For more information, call 747-3085.


Biotoxin Lab

Open House Set

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska Resource Protection Department will host its open house and the grand opening of  the new biotoxin lab 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, in the RPD offices, 429 Katlian Street.

The public is invited to learn about the department’s programs and projects, including the recently established regional harmful algal bloom monitoring network and the associated biotoxin testing lab. 


Christmas Bazaar

Slated for Dec. 5

Alaska Native Sisterhood will host its annual Christmas Bazaar 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and the ANB Founders Hall.

All are invited to attend. Many local artists will sell their Native artwork, jewelry, jams/jellies, afghans and more.

Ramshackle Cabaret 

Seeks Volunteers

‘‘The Ramshackle Cabaret: Ace in the Hole’’ is seeking all manner of talented folk and volunteers for the upcoming 2016 show.

‘‘Not only are we curious about unique and provocative performers, we are also recruiting bartenders, stagehands, sound/lighting folks, security, and other creative, hard-working individuals,’’ organizers said.

SLFN Education

Panel to Meet

The Sitka Local Foods Network education committee will hold a brainstorming session on education activities for the upcoming year 6:30-8 p.m.  Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 408 Marine Street. Parking is off Spruce Street.

Experienced gardeners are especially needed to attend. The group will discuss organizing a Sitka Garden Club.

Holiday Grind

Set for Dec. 12

The Sitka Monthly Grind announces the Holiday’s Grind to be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.

The philosophy of the Monthly Grind is affordable, non-political, and family entertainment. Tickets must be purchased in advance at Old Harbor Books. The cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children under 12. Those taking a plate of homemade dessert can have the price of their ticket refunded at the door.

Cups are encouraged to help reduce the trash. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. For more information call Jeff at 747-4821.


Work Party Set

On SJ Campus

The first fall Saturday volunteer work party on the SJ Campus is planned 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.

Participants will meet at the Yaw Art building at 9 a.m., break for a hot lunch at noon, and continue until 3 p.m.

Tasks include cleaning out the Yaw art building attic, organizing costumes and props, and laying down a plywood attic floor. All are welcome to join at any time. Volunteers should wear warm clothes as work space is unheated.

PFD Voter Ballot

Signatures Taken

Signatures are being collected to support the PFD voter ballot initiative, which would allow people to register to vote when they fill out their PFD application. 

Volunteers will be collecting signatures at Friday’s Art Walk downtown, at Saturday’s Christmas Bazaar at the SJ campus, and at Old Harbor Books during business hours this week. Science Center

Closure Noted

The Sitka Sound Science Center will be closed Nov. 25-27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sitka Sprouts was canceled for today.

‘‘If you’re thankful for SSSC, and want to share our aquarium with visiting family and friends, swing by to see us on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,’’ the center said.


Advent Mass

At St. Gregory’s

St. Gregory’s Parish will hold its annual Advent Mass 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, at Sweetland Hall on the SJ Campus. The community is invited.

The Mass will be followed by a community potluck. All are invited to take a dish to share.
