Food Safety

Training Offered

A certified food protection manager training will be offered March 3 by videoconference in Sitka.

The food safety workshop, which is hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. State regulations require that all food establishments have at least one certified food protection manager to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

‘Love Letter’

Workshop Set

The free workshop ‘‘The Art of the Love Letter’’ will be offered 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at UAS-Sitka Campus, Room 229.

UAS English professor Math Trafton will teach this casual one-time writing workshop. Students will explore the nature of love letters, read a few from famous authors, and then practice writing one.

It is suitable for all audiences and no writing experience is required. Paper, pens, stamped envelopes and refreshments will be provided.

Offer Positions

Volunteer positions are available on the following municipal boards and commissions: Parks and Recreation Committee, Animal Hearing Board, Historic Preservation Commission, Investment Committee, Police and Fire Commission, Port and Harbors Commission, and Gary Paxton Industrial Park Board of Directors.

YWCA Alaska

To Honor Youths

 YWCA Alaska seeks to honor Alaskan youths, ages 16-18, who have overcome major challenges in their lives and have made efforts toward fulfilling the mission of YWCA Alaska: eliminating racism and empowering women while promoting dignity, peace, freedom and justice for all.

‘Wizard of Oz’

To be Staged

The community is invited to join Dorothy, Toto and the cast of Sitka Fine Arts Camp’s Young Performers Theater for its upcoming musical production of ‘‘Wizard of Oz.’’

Four performances are scheduled: 7 p.m. Friday, Feb, 19; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21.

All performances will be at the Odess Theater on the SJ Campus. Tickets are $10 general, $5 students, and children under 5 are free. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books or at the door. For more information call 747-3085.

 

Documentary

At Public Library

Sitka Public Library will observe Elizabeth Peratrovich Day with a screening of the documentary “For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska” 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Lutherans Plan for

Ash Wednesday

Sitka Lutheran Church invites all to gather at 6 p.m. for Ash Wednesday services, Feb. 10, at 224 Lincoln Street.

 Along with receiving ashes of penitence, participants will explore biblical texts to begin a “Faith on the Move” study series for Lent. “Out of the Water – Resisting the Power of Fear” is the theme.

After the service, fellowship will be offered with soup and bread provided.

Karate Classes Listed

Kenwa Karate of Sitka’s next monthly session begins Feb. 15 at the New Archangel Dancers studio.

Medvejie Race

Set to Register

The 11th running of the Medvejie/Solstice races are set 9 a.m. June 18.

The half-marathon, 10k and 5k races are out and back starting at Herring Cove at the end of the Sawmill Creek road, adjacent to the Beaver lake Trail parking lot. All races will be run on the Green Lake Road.

The entry fees are $40 for the half marathon, $30 for the 10k, and $20 for the 5k. A non-cotton T-shirt is included for the first 75 entrants. Online registration is available now by using the link on the Medvejie/Solstice Facebook page. Runners signed up before May 6 are guaranteed proper T-shirt size. Funds go to the Sitka High track and cross-country teams.

Pre-registration starts 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, June 17, in the Sitka High School commons.

Race day registration starts 8:15 a.m. at Herring Cove. Call 738-1102 for further information.

 

Chamber to Meet

The Geotechnical Report on the Aug. 18 landslide including findings and recommendations will be presented at the Chamber luncheon noon Wednesday at the Westmark Sitka.

David Bruce, attorney from Savitt Bruce and Wiley consulting with the city, and Bill Laprade, a geotechnical consultant from Shannon and Wilson, will present the report.

The report was commissioned by the City and Borough of Sitka to determine the risk associated with future landslides in the Kramer Drive area. 

The public is invited to attend.

 

‘Odd Man Out’

To be Screened

Sitka Public Library’s Film Noir Club will screen the 1947 noir, “Odd Man Out,” starring James Mason, 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the library.

Quilt Trunk Show

Slated for Friday

Visiting quilt instructor Eva Holen will share her art of quilting and sewing 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12.

The trunk show will be at Grace Harbor Church on Halibut Point Road.

Ocean Wave Quilters is sponsoring Holen’s visit and invites the public to attend. Holen teaches creative sewing classes at Lake Washington Technical College in Kirkland, Wash. She has been sewing and quilting for more than 30 years, has developed patterns, and teaches classes around the world. The trunk show is free to attend.

A few spots still remain in Holen’s “Whatcha Got?” project bag class noon-6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13. All are invited to stop by Abby’s Reflection to see the bag and sign up. The cost  is $42. Call Margie Esquiro at 752-0567 with questions regarding the class or trunk show. 

 

Harp Sing Set

The Sitka Second Sunday Sacred Harp Sing is set for 3:30-5 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Pioneers Home Chapel. Listeners and beginners are welcome. Call 738-2089 with questions.

 

‘Toast to Tongass’

Event Set Feb. 17

Updates to the Tongass forest plan and what is being done to protect wild Alaskan salmon will be given 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Bayview Pub.

‘Five Wishes’

To be Discussed

“Five Wishes,” a legal document describing who can make decisions for an individual about medical treatment and comfort when seriously ill or at end of life will be presented 2-4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.

Pastor Sandra Rudd and Dr. Debra Pohlman will be on hand to clarify and answer questions as participants work through their own ‘‘five wishes.’’

“Conversation with loved ones, in advance of serious illness or death, insures that when the time comes when one is very sick or not able to speak for themselves, their  wishes and directions will be respected and followed. This holds true regardless of ones’ age, health or wealth,” organizers said.
