CARES Act allocations, a resolution requiring face coverings in various public locations, and the future of the Baranof statue will be taken up by the Assembly at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Harrigan Centennial Hall. A full meeting agenda appears in today’s Sentinel, Page 4.
Two agenda items are related to the statue.
One is a resolution to relocate the statue from in front of Harrigan Centennial Hall to inside the Sitka History Museum. Kevin Knox and Steven Eisenbeisz are co-sponsors of the resolution.
The second is a proposed ordinance sponsored by Valorie Nelson and Kevin Mosher that would place an advisory question about the statue on the October municipal election ballot. The ordinance, which will be up for first reading Tuesday, would ask the voters: “Should the City and Borough of Sitka remove the statue of Alexander Baranov from its current location in front of Harrigan Centennial Hall? Yes or No.”
The mask and face covering resolution ordinance was co-sponsored by Knox and Thor Christianson. If it passes, face coverings or masks would be required in indoor public settings or communal spaces outside the home, including retail spaces and grocery stores, childcare centers, and bars and restaurants (except while eating and drinking). The list of exceptions is also extensive, and includes children under 2, and those with physical or mental health conditions.
The Assembly also will consider five ordinances related to the city’s $14 million in CARES Act funds for various purposes, including grants for businesses, nonprofits and new city projects.
The Assembly will consider several appointments and reappointments to city commissions.
The meeting is open to the public and remote access is available through the city website.
