Margaret Mary Gordon
Margaret Mary Gordon, a Sitka resident since 1975, passed away April 3 at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center. She was 89.
Services are pending, at the Pentecostal Church.
Margaret was born August 14, 1933, in Wrangell, the daughter of Fortunato and Emily Gotardo. She later was joined by sisters Julia and Betty.
She married Alfred Eli Gordon in 1953.
On August 14, 1975, she arrived in Sitka. She worked at the Mt. Edgecumbe High School girls dorm from 1975 until 1983, and also worked at Lory’s Cafe, Betty Eliason Child Care Center, the SEARHC kitchen, and Seafood Producers Co-op.
In the words of her family, she had a beautiful outlook on life. She remained positive even when life was hard.
“She was the most beautiful friend and mother,” the family said. “We were blessed with such a mother – words can’t describe how she loved everyone and was loved back; it was her passion, loving people.”
Among her favorite activities was the Civil Air Patrol. She joined in 1975, and continued to attend meetings, and making 2nd lieutenant. “It was the love and joy of her life – it brought her such happiness,” her family said.
Her other hobbies included bingo, being with friends and family, and collecting things she liked.
Margaret was preceded in death by sons Reggie Gordon and Dustin Gordon; and sister Julia.
She is survived by sons Jonathan Gordon, Frank Gordon, Thomas Allen Gordon and Theodore Eldred; daughters Alfreda Sipe, Emily Anselm, Maria Gordon and Dorothy Harriet; and sister Betty Ruks.
She was very proud of her grandchildren: Dorothy Gordon, Marcia Gordon, Bernadette Kibby, Kristina Kreighbaum Freeman, Curtis DeTemple, Diego Carlos, Allanah Carlos, Kenyatta Bradley, Elizabeth Newell, Caribeth Gundran; many, many great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The family extended thanks to the Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center for the care – including making her pureed meals and smoothies with protein – that the nurses and doctors gave Margaret. “It meant so much,” the family said.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to her son Jonathan Gordon, 106 Charlie Joseph Street, to help with the memorial and cremation costs.

Sitka Community Hospital board of directors has asked SEARHC to stop providing most health care services to non-beneficiary patients. “During the collaborative process SEARHC has said they’re happy to do anything they can do to help,” said SCH Administrator Bill Patten. “This is one of the things they can do – not provide services to non-beneficiaries.”

What began 50 years ago in a Methodist parsonage in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be celebrated Sunday in Sitka. Les and Caroline Yaw’s four children invite the couple’s many, many friends to attend a golden wedding anniversary reception at the Centennial Building.
