Phil Jackson
Phillip George Jackson, 65, passed away, Monday, April 6, in Sitka.
A celebration of life will take place in Ketchikan at the Fish Pirates Saloon, 4-7 p.m. Saturday April 18; and in Sitka on a date to be determined.
Phil was born Dec., 13, 1949, in Ketchikan. He grew up there, and attended Ketchikan High School where he played varsity basketball. His basketball career consisted of three state championships and he had the privilege of playing and competing with some of the state’s best players, many of whom he remained close to.
After graduating he went on to College of Alameda in California to pursue a degree in mechanics, a passion he acquired after watching and learning alongside his father, Les Martin.
Phil was married to Laurie Thompson for many years and had two children, Becky and Phillip, as well as a stepdaughter Bonnie.
Phil taught mechanics at Ketchikan High School for 16 years, during which time he carried on his love for basketball by refereeing and coaching the boys varsity squad. In his spare time he rebuilt many diesel engines for the fishermen in Southeast Alaska. Most recently he worked in Sitka, at Allen Marine, doing what he loved alongside his son Phillip.
He was a man who truly lived life to the fullest, had a wonderful sense of humor, and the gift of gab. He was the first person to lend a helping hand, was always there for his friends and family, and loved his children deeply.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Doris Martin; and brothers William Jackson, Byron Wallace and Roland Wallace.
He is survived by his son Phillip Jackson (Michelle Barker); daughter Becky (Mark) Leo; stepdaughter Bonnie Abbott; father and friend Leslie L. Martin; brothers Fred Wallace, Wayne (Kathy) Jackson and Paul Jackson; and sisters Carol Carle and Kathy (Richard) Hittle.
His grandchildren Abby Leo, Katie Leo and Lexi Abbott; aunt Regina Skan; uncles Jonathan Rowan and George Gardner; sister-in-law Margo Wallace; and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws and a host of long-time friends also survive.
Phil was a hardworking, loving dad and papa who will be dearly missed by many, his family said.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Moose Scholarship Program in his honor.
