Path of Hope

Walk July 14

Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society will host a Path of Hope walk 1-3 p.m. Sunday, July 14, behind Moller Field by the running track.

The event is to celebrate cancer survivors and their families. Refreshments will be served by Emblem Club 142. A treasure hunt is planned.

Program June 20

A conversation about building more mountain bike trails in Sitka will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Mean Queen at Totem Square.

The Sitka Cycling Club steering committee will meet noon-1 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the Fisheye Organic Café.

Meeting Tonight

Alaska Day Festival planners will meet 6:30 p.m. tonight at Centennial Hall.

“Frontier First Responders” is the added theme this year for Sitka’s mid-October community commemoration of the official transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States of America which occurred at Sitka on Oct. 18, 1867.

Photos and implements of those who came to the rescue in bygone days are being collected.

The Alaska Day Committee meets each third Tuesday of the month. Persons having comments about Festival activities or new volunteers are invited to attend the meetings or contact Chairman Ted Allio at 747-5124 or Vice Chair Steve Dalquist at 752-0750. 

Museum Closure

Sheldon Jackson Museum will be closed Monday, June 24, for an all-day staff training session. 

Summer hours will resume 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 25. The museum is closed on observed state holidays. 

General admission is $7, and $6 for seniors. Visitors 18 years of age and younger, Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum, and those with passes are admitted free.

Tribal Kids Fair

Sitka Tribe of Alaska will host a back-to-school Tribal Kids Fair 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Sitka High School.

Tribally-enrolled school-age youths and their families are invited for backpacks and limited supplies, gift cards for new shoes, crafts and games.  Community resources will be available.

Marine Mammal

Panel to Meet

The Sitka Marine Mammal Commission will meet 6 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Sitka Tribe of Alaska Resource Protection Department office, 429 Katlian Street.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act, Harvest management plans and  definition of Alaska Natives will be discussed.

July 4 Parade

Theme Chosen

The Chamber of Commerce board of directors has chosen ‘‘Old Time 4th of July’’ as the theme of the annual Independence Day parade.

Dan Jones will be parade marshal. He is a consulting civil engineer, longtime Chamber board member, and Sitka Music Festival board member.

The parade lineup will be at noon on Lake Street. It will begin at 1 p.m.  and proceed down Lincoln Street toward City Hall, ending on Katlian Street.

Registration is required to participate. Forms can be picked up at the Sitka Chamber office at 104 Lake Street, or on the Chamber’s website at www.sitkachamber.com. Registrations must be submitted by June 28. The entry fee is $25.

National Guard

Explorers to Meet

The Alaska Army National Guard Explorers will meet 6-9 p.m. June 26 at the Sitka Armory, 1508 Sawmill Creek Road.

High school students ages 14-20 years wanting to learn leadership and skills such as survival, combatives, land navigation, patrol techniques, camouflage self and equipment, and medical are invited. For information contact SFC Justin Mullenix at 907-290-4306.

Ozobots-Robotics

Workshop on Tap

Sitka Public library will offer an introduction to Ozobot line coding for ages 7 to 9 years 3:30-4:30 p.m. June 25 and July 2. 

Participants will create a LEGO village and Ozo-roads to run through it. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.
