Sitka Volleyball Wins, Forces Third Round
By GARLAND KENNEDY

There’s been no home court advantage in the Region V volleyball tournament this year. Sitka won 3-1 Wednesday night against the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves, at MEHS. The Wolves’ victory leveled the score in the tournament.
Sitka won with set scores of 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-19. It was a hard-fought night.
On Tuesday night, the Braves beat the Wolves, at Sitka. With the regional tournament tied 1-1, the cross-bridge rivals, the only 3A teams in the region, face off again tonight, at 7 p.m., at Sitka High.
Wolves’ coach Zaide Allen said her team was “passing well and got aggressive on offense.”
While Sitka struggled to find their footing in the game against Edgecumbe on Tuesday, Allen said that on Wednesday night, “they really came together and played like a team.”
Allen also noted that “Jocelyn Brady again had the game-winning hit.”
Sitka’s Chloe Morrison, right, hits the ball against Mt. Edgecumbe’s Lizzy Allen (13) and Vernae Raymoth (10). Sitka won the night 3-1, bringing the tournament score to a tied 1-1. The teams play again tonight. (Sentinel photo)
Mt. Edgecumbe coach Mike Mahoney said that his team “passed well and hit well, but we made too many unforced errors and served the ball in the net too much.”
On the bright side, Mahoney added that senior middle Vernae Raymoth “had a monster game with 22 kills.”
Edgecumbe’s fans in the bleachers also made an impression. The stands were a sea of pink, as MEHS students dressed in the color denoting breast cancer awareness. Several fans took a more comedic approach and dressed in dinosaur costumes.
Teams go toe-to-toe one more time 7 p.m. tonight at Sitka High. The winner in the best-of-five match will claim the regional title and play in the state tourney in Anchorage Nov. 14-16. Coach Allen said her team has “to come ready and play consistent.”
