Giving Tree Up
At Wells Fargo
The Giving Tree at Wells Fargo Bank will be up one more week for individuals to give Christmas gifts to Sitkans in need.
Tags can be chosen to give a gift to children, teens, women and elders. Unwrapped gifts are to be returned to Well Fargo main lobby with tag attached. Wrapping paper is also needed. Call Julia Smith at 738-6336 with questions.
Swing Dance
Slated Friday
A community swing dance is planned 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall.
Belly Meat will be performing with Ted Howard on guitar and mandolin, Ernie Eggleston on string bass, and Gary Gouker on harmonica.
Community swing dances are held every second Friday of the month through the winter. The hall is at 411 Spruce Street, near the corner of Spruce and Erler.
A donation of $5 for the fellowship and $10 for the band is requested of each couple who attend. Those without dance partners are invited.
Coaching in swing and waltz will be available. Regular dance classes are held every Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m., at the New Archangel Dance studio, 109 Smith Street.

Candlelight Tours of
Bishop’s House Set
Sitka National Historical Park will offer a series of winter candlelight tours of the Russian Bishop’s House this winter.
Candlelight tours will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, 20, 27 and Jan. 3. Doors to the house will open at 3:15 p.m., closing at 3:30 p.m. as the tour commences.
Because of lighting conditions at that time of day, the tour may not be well suited for those who have difficulty seeing in low light environments, the park service said.
The final tour of the series will be a daylight tour at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. Doors to the house will open at 9:45 a.m., closing at 10 a.m. as the tour commences.
Each tour is limited to eight persons. Participants should plan to spend 45-60 minutes in the house and be prepared to climb stairs and stand for the duration of the upstairs program (25-30 minutes). For information or to reserve a spot on one of the tours, call the park visitor center at 747-0110.
Residents and visitors will learn about the history of the Russian colonization in Alaska. The tour will include time to view the first floor museum in addition to attending the ranger-led program of the second floor restored historical residence of the Orthodox bishop.
S.E. Waterfowl
Season to Close
The Southeast Alaska waterfowl season, which includes Game Management Units 1-4, will close at 11:59 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16.
The closure date falls earlier than in past years to align with waterfowl regulation changes approved by the Board of Game. The Board decided to implement alternating season schedules as a compromise to appease hunters wishing for more opportunities to harvest not only early, but also late season waterfowl species. Under this regulation change, odd years will have a season that runs Sept. 1-Dec. 16. Even years will have a season Sept. 16-Dec. 31.
Film Society, Coliseum
To Show ‘Attla,’
‘Christmas Story’
The Sitka Film Society and Coliseum Theater will present the Winter Film Extravaganza over the weekend, 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15, at the Coliseum.
The first film “ATTLA: The Legendary Dogsled Champion” tells the gripping but little-known story of George Attla, a charismatic Alaska Native dogsled racer who, with one good leg and fierce determination, became a legendary sports hero in Northern communities around the world. Part dog whisperer, part canny businessman and part heartthrob, Attla rose to international fame during a period of history when Western education, economies, and culture penetrated the Alaskan village lifestyle and forever changed the state with the discovery of oil in the late 1960s.
The film has a few Sitka connections, including Attla’s childhood connection with Sitka and the book “Make Prayers for Raven,” by the late Richard Nelson. Nelson’s book was inspired by what he learned living in Huslia, the Film Society was told.
The film is 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. Tickets are $8, and the film lasts less than an hour.
The second film is a holiday family classic, “A Christmas Story,” 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15. The original film, ‘‘Fantastic Fungi,’’ was canceled by the company distributing the film, requiring a quick fix by the Coliseum and Film Society, SFS reports.
“We are pleased to be able to offer a family classic during the holiday season,” the film society said. Tickets are specially priced, at $5. The show is rated PG.
