The ANS mission is ‘‘‘to better the lives of Native people and their families; to fight for civil rights and land rights for all Native people; to share the cultural knowledge, wisdom, and artistic beauty of Native tribal societies, and to strive for a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood among all people.”

Membership dues are $12 a year, and all are welcome. For call or text Nancy, 907-227-9102, with questions.

Gross to Speak

In Sitka Tonight

Dr. Al Gross will speak 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Crescent Harbor shelter.

Gross is an independent running for U.S. Senate and is ‘‘on a mission to lower Alaskans’ healthcare costs, grow the state’s economy, and protect local fisheries,’’ organizers said.

Attendees are expected to wear a mask and maintain social distance.

Supporters are invited to meet at the Crescent Harbor parking lot at 4:30 p.m. for a 45-minute drive through Sitka. At 6:40 p.m., Sitkans can meet on top of the O’Connell Bridge to welcome Gross to town. Signs are encouraged for both events, organizers said.

Contact Krisanne Rice, 738-4932, for further information.

Virtual Halloween

Pumpkin Carving

Contest on Tap

A Halloween virtual pumpkin carving contest, sponsored by 3 to 5 Preschool, is being held through Saturday, Oct. 31.

Everyone can submit photos or videos of their pumpkins to enter to win one of three $25 gift card prizes to local businesses.

Categories are silliest, scariest and most creative. The entry fee is $10 per pumpkin; however, if the pumpkin was purchased at the Oct. 17 Pumpkin Patch event, the fee is $5.

Winners will be announced and contacted on Nov. 1. To enter, please visit www.3to5preschool.org/fundraising or look for our event on Facebook.

The preschool also is holding its  Monster Mash Dash (a virtual 5K costume run/walk) on Oct. 31.

‘‘This will be a great way to spread some Halloween cheer, do something healthy for yourself and also safely socially distance,’’ the preschool said. ‘‘The virtual 5K means that you will dress up in your costume, at a time of your own convenience and run/walk a 5K route of your choice.’’

A Monster Mash Dash music video will be up on Facebook and the school’s website. Participants will receive a medal. To participate, visit www.3to5preschool.org/fundraising or look for the event on Facebook.
