Sitka Woman Tests Positive for COVID

The city’s virus dashboard has added a new positive test result for COVID-19.
The positive case is a female, age 20-29, who was tested on Wednesday and received the results the same day. The woman, who is a resident, was “symptomatic.” She is isolating, and contact tracing is not yet complete.
The transmission classification for the positive case is listed as “community spread,” which means no source was identified.
Sitka currently has four active cases, and the 14-day rolling case rate is .29 average cases per day, according to the dashboard. The community remains on a “low” alert level - or “yellow.” The school district also is on “low” and Mt. Edgecumbe High School is listed as at a “moderate” risk level, after a positive test result was returned for an asymptomatic student during routine monthly testing.
A new listing on the dashboard is for the latest test results for COVID in samples from the Sitka wastewater system.
In the two samples collected, on October 13 and 30, evidence of COVID-19 was “not detected,” said the University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Biological Sciences’ SARS-CoV-2 wastewater analysis report.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
