Mt. Edgecumbe Seniors Collect Diplomas
By Sentinel Staff
Seventy-five Mt. Edgecumbe High School seniors collected diplomas this morning at a graduation ceremony at the B.J. McGillis Gymnasium.
Kevin Gwinn, a former MEHS teacher who taught technology, engineering, robotics and various math classes for seven years, gave the commencement address. He now works in New Jersey as a computer scientist. The class of 2021 requested Gwinn because of the ‘‘profound impact he had on his students.’’
Mt. Edgecumbe High School seniors battle high winds before going into the fieldhouse this morning for their graduation ceremony. This year’s shortened ceremony included a number of COVID-19 mitigations including holding the event in the voluminous gym, spacing out audience members and requiring everyone to wear masks. The class motto was “We were the guinea pig class.” Last year the school was unable to hold a commencement ceremony before students were rushed home at the onset of the pandemic. Also speaking were class valedictorian Tia Patkotak of Anchorage and salutatorian Cheyenne Murphy of Bethel.
The senior class selected Regan Hoblet of False Pass and Aliyah Schumann of North Pole as student representative speakers.
“We Were the Guinea Pig Class” was chosen as the class motto. The class color is maroon and the class flower is chocolate cosmos.
Superintendent Janelle Vanasse gave the welcome followed by teachers presenting diplomas.
The graduation ceremony was not open to the public, but was livestreamed from the MEHS website. The slideshow and awards are available on video through the school website.
The marshals for the ceremony, eleventh-graders chosen by the senior class, were Kallan Hill of Kotzebue, Fiona Raasch of Sitka, Charlee Korthuis of Bethel, and Tiahna Capelle of Fairbanks.
