TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Parking Closure
At Centennial Hall
A partial closure of the Harrigan Centennial Hall parking lot is planned 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, for a landscaping project.
City staff and volunteers will be landscaping at the hall and Sitka Public Library parking lots at 330 and 320 Harbor Drive. Some areas of the parking lots may be closed during these times. Contact the public works department with any questions at 747-1804.
City Cancels
Coffee Meeting
The Sept. 21 city’s Coffee with the Administrator has been canceled because of the high level of COVID-19 cases in Sitka.
The next Coffee with the Administrator is tentatively scheduled 6-8 p.m. Oct. 19, assuming COVID-19 positive cases decline to a safer level, the city said.
‘‘Please continue to follow the updates from our Emergency Operations Center to learn what you can do to help stop the spread of COVID-19,’’ a press release from the city said.
Access Limited
At Campground
Vehicle access may be limited at the Starrigavan Recreation Area and Campground roads on Sept. 18, until 11 a.m., for a cross-country race hosted by Sitka High School, the U.S. Forest Service said.
Contact Rebecca Peterman at 738-3725 with questions.
Electrical Outage
At Sealing Cove
The city electric department is scheduling an electrical outage at Sealing Cove Harbor Sept. 15, to last at least four hours.
Crews will replace a transformer. Floats B, C and D are expected to be without power, with additional floats that may experience a loss of power.
Brown Bear Hunt
Opens Wednesday
The fall brown bear registration hunt RB077 will open Sept. 15 in Game Management Unit 4, which includes all of Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof islands.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game said prior to registering, hunters must watch the brown bear identification video “Take a Closer Look.” View online at https://vimeo.com/30511231. Hunters are being encouraged to target male bears.
‘‘In the fall declining daylight hours, inclement weather, and higher number of sows without cubs all contribute to historically higher levels of female harvest than the spring hunt,’’ ADF&G said. ‘‘Careful observation and preparation are necessary to differentiate males from females under these conditions.’’
Hunters must have a valid hunting license, registration permit, and a brown bear locking-tag prior to hunting. Register at ADF&G offices or online at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov.
Nonresidents hunting brown bear in Unit 4 with a relative resident must have a drawing permit. All other nonresident and nonresident alien hunters must hire a registered guide, Fish and Game said.
Successful hunters must report (in person, by phone, or by mail) to the Fish & Game office in Sitka or Douglas within 10 days of kill. The entire hide (with claws and evidence of sex attached) and skull must be salvaged. The skull must be skinned from the hide and both must be unfrozen. Sealing is required within 30 days of kill.
Permitted hunters, regardless if they hunted or not, must return hunt reports to the department by close of business Jan. 15, 2022. For information, call the Sitka area office at 747-5449.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
