TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Sitka Police Department logged the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.
September 15
At 7:30 a.m. a woman from out of town asked for a welfare check on her father. Officers found he was able to care for himself, and would contact his daughter.
At 9:23 a.m. an android phone was reported found on a The Ride bus.
A backpack with no identification was left at the Highliner.
At 12:02 p.m. a Katlian Street business reported an ex-employee was trespassing.
A purse left in the 200 block of Katlian was returned to its owner.
A caller reported possible drug activity on a street off HPR.
The animal control officer requested a case number for a third charge of allowing dogs to run at large.
At 3:36 p.m. a Peterson Avenue resident reported a possible gunshot in the resident’s direction. Officers found no source of a shot in the area.
At 4:36 p.m. a caller reported hearing a couple fighting and a child crying in an apartment on Burkhart Street. Officers found the two were arguing, not fighting.
At 5:54 p.m. an officer helped a chicken cross the road at Edgecumbe Drive and Kashevaroff.
At 8:31 p.m. police were asked to check on a man on Baranof Street who hadn’t been heard from in a while. He was found to need medical assistance.
At 8:54 p.m. a bear call came in from Bahrt Circle and Charles Street.
At 11:53 p.m. a problem in apartments in the 300 block of Lincoln Street was found to be the result of mistaken identity among three individuals, and all was well.

Tommy Svilar Jr., 25, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear on a Sept. 10 charge of violation of an instructional permit.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls Wednesday at 8:36 a.m., 3:50 p.m., 5:14 p.m. and 6:51 p.m.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
