Fans Carve Halloween Pumpkins To Fund Wolves Volleyball Team
By Sentinel Staff
With Halloween sneaking around the corner, local pumpkin carving enthusiasts can help the Sitka High Lady Wolves volleyball squad raise money by entering the team’s first ever pumpkin carving contest.
Coach Zaide Allen said the contest is a seasonal, COVID-safe way for the team to raise funds.
“This is the first year that we’ve ever done this. I actually randomly came up with this on my own… This is kind of an interesting, different way to fund raise and also do a community event,” Allen told the Sentinel. “Basketball has the poinsettias that they sell at Christmas time, so I was trying to think of a Halloween related thing, since volleyball goes over Halloween.”
An entry costs $5 and a person can submit as many pumpkins as they would like, she said. Prizes will be awarded for a variety of categories.
“We have categories on the most unique, the most Alaskan, the most realistic, and the most cute pumpkin or adorable pumpkin. So they’ll be judged by the volleyball program and the coaches have the final say,” she said.
The first prize winner will receive a flightseeing tour.
“Dove Island (Lodge) has donated a flightseeing tour on their floatplane for five people and the first place winner will win that as well as a cash prize,” she said.
Other organizations including Shee Atika, Yellow Jersey bike shop and Seamart, also have donated to the fundraiser.
There is a separate competition for kids age 14 and under.
So far, Allen noted, the pumpkin carving contest has drawn in about $4,500, a quarter of which will go to prizes. The remaining three quarters will pay for team expenses such as travel and uniforms.
The coach said the volleyball season costs tens of thousands of dollars annually.
“It all kind of depends. Not counting state, it would probably be about $24,000 for the season, but with state it will be up around a little under $30,000… That obviously includes travel expenses, the airplane because we can’t
take the ferry, so most of that is airplane tickets, also renting vans, hotels if we have to stay in hotels. A lot of places we can stay in the schools but not in all places,” Allen said.
A Sitkan can enter by emailing sitkavolleyball@gmail.com, carving a pumpkin and submitting a photo along with an entry number.
The contest is open for new submissions until midnight on Halloween, Oct. 31, to allow families to carve pumpkins on the holiday itself, Allen said.
