TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

The Sitka High Wolves basketball teams competed over the weekend in Nome.
The Lady Wolves went undefeated in three games against Nome, Unalakleet and Kotzebue, felling Nome’s Lady Nanooks Thursday 58-33; downing Unalakleet Friday in a 54-18 blowout; and sealing their victory streak with a 59-31 win over Kotzebue Saturday.
Coach Mindy Bartolaba was happy with how her team performed.
“We did well, we won all three of our games and the Sportsmanship Award ... All girls showed growth this weekend and that was great to see,” she said by text from Nome today.
Sitka’s teams were scheduled to depart Nome on Sunday, but the flight was delayed and the teams now plan to make it home today, she added.
On the boys side, Sitka scraped past Kotzebue Thursday 56-52, but fell to Unalakleet 73-45 Friday, and to Nome 76-34 Saturday.
Sitka’s Tawny Smith and John Antolin earned the Hotshot Award. Kaleena Tucker was named free throw champion, while Maitlin Young and Wes Urias won the three-point accolade. Shane Webb, Ava Brady, Tawny Smith and Maitlin Young were named to the All-Tourney team.
