LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. Sitka Police Department logged the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.
May 6
At 7:47 a.m. a business in the 1300 block of SMC reported having a theft on video but decided not to press charges.
At 8:04 a.m. a man was refusing to come out of the restroom at Crescent Harbor. An officer escorted him out.
Graffiti was reported near the Sitka Sound Science Center and the library.
A man and woman were reported causing a disturbance on Etolin Way. Officers found nothing criminal.
At 12:41 p.m. two huskys were reported running at large on Pherson.
A woman asked to talk to an officer about a child custody case.
A husky at the Raptor Center was returned to its owner.
At 10:36 p.m. two woman were reported having an argument about a civil matter. Officers talked to them.
May 7
At 11:36 a.m. an officer warned many tourists in the 3300 block of HPR who were walking to town to stay out of the roadway. (See story, page 1.)
A mother said her son was to have flown from Anchorage to Sitka but hadn’t shown up. She was advised to call the Anchorage Police Department.
Adults smoking marijuana in Totem Park were advised it was illegal to do so on federal property.
Trash was reported scattered in the 3800 block of HPR.
A caller said a picture of a juvenile with a firearm had been posted on local social media. The parents were told.
May 8
A caller said he’d seen honey leaking from the fuel tank on a friend’s boat at Sealing Cove. The boat owner said someone had threatened to damage his boat. Police opened an investigation.
An elderly dog on Etolin Street was taken to the animal shelter.
At 5 p.m. a park ranger heard screaming in Totem Park and found people in possession of alcohol. He advised them it was illegal to have alcohol in the park.
At 11:41 p.m. juveniles on Katlian Street were informed of curfew hours.
May 9
A downtown bar reported luggage had been left there for a couple of days. Police attempted to locate the owner, who is out of town.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received two ambulance calls Friday, five on Saturday and six on Sunday.
Sitka Police
Cipriano Guererro, 46, was charged Saturday with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.
Coast Guard
Coast Guard Air Station Sitka medevacked an 81-year-old woman from Kake to Sitka Saturday. A helicopter launched around 10:30 p.m. and returned with the woman around midnight, the Coast Guard said.
On Sunday, a helicopter went to the Petersburg area after an EPIRB went off around 11 a.m. No reports of missing boats came in, and the boat owner associated with the EPIRB said both he and his vessel were fine. The Coast Guard worked with Troopers on the call, which involved a search of the land and water.
On another call, at 3:30 a.m. today, the Coast Guard received an EPIRP signal from the Tongass Narrows area. Station Ketchikan searched the area and found no signs of anyone in distress. The helicopter was about to take off from Sitka, when the Coast Guard learned that the GPS position of the EPIRB was on land.
Wildlife Troopers
Caven Pfeiffer, 44, of Sitka was cited May 4 for allegedly taking more than the allowed lingcod bycatch during a commercial halibut fishing trip on May 1, Wildlife Troopers report. Proceeds from the sale of 945 pounds of lingcod were seized, and a court date was set for Sitka District Court for May 24.
