LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. Sitka Police Department logged the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.
May 19
At 3:01 a.m. a woman said a man was walking up and down around her home, apparently stalking her. Officers searched the area but found no one.
At 5:34 a.m. a camper door was found open on a truck. Officers found nothing awry and secured the door.
A man complained his property near the Gavan Hill trail head had been tampered with.
The park ranger reported vandals had lit a trash can on fire near the Sitka National Historical Park bridge and caused other damage.
Parking tickets were issued at the Castle Hill parking lot, the 600 block of Katlian, Thomsen Harbor, Eliason Harbor, Sealing Cove, and the 300 block of Lincoln Street.
A trooper issued a citation in a traffic violation in the 4800 block of HPR.
Graffiti was reported at Crescent Harbor.
At 11:50 a.m., two women were reported having a dispute with a taxi driver at the airport. A Good Samaritan stepped in and paid the fare for the two.
A cruise ship worker turned in a debit card that had been found. It was placed in the police property drawer.
At 3:39 p.m. a dog was reported running at large in the 1900 block of SMC. The animal control officer was unable to find its owner.
A woman at Crescent Harbor asked for help getting her vehicle started. Officers found the battery was dead, and the vehicle will be allowed to remain there until a new battery is installed.
At 8:44 p.m. two people talked to an officer about problems with a juvenile child. They were advised of their options.
At 11:51 p.m. a man told an officer someone had taken his truck without permission and driven it to the GPIP.
May 20
At 12:29 a.m. a Burkhart Street resident reported downstairs neighbors were being noisy, keeping the resident’s children awake. Officers responded and the neighbor was taken to a facility.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received seven ambulance calls Thursday.
At 10:20 p.m. Thursday responded to a fire call at 103 Burkhart Drive. The fire was out when the SFD crew arrived, and the crew cleared smoke and ventilated the area.
Sitka Police
Russell R. Powell, 44, was charged Thursday with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a substance test and resisting arrest.
Leonty R. Williams, 30, was charged Thursday with violating conditions of probation.
In Court
Kory H. Versteeg, 38, of Petersburg, on a Fish & Game charge of commercial fishing seasons and periods for net gear, a misdemeanor, was fined $5,000 with $2,500 suspended.
Coast Guard
A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka medevacked a 40-year-old Hoonah man with a head injury, on Wednesday.
The Coast Guard received the call at 9:35 p.m., launched at 10:40 p.m., and flew the patient to Juneau to receive medical care.
