One Applies for Seat on School Board
By GARLAND KENNEDY
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Sitka School District received only one application to fill a vacancy on the School Board until the municipal election in October. Former Assembly member Valorie Nelson applied for the short-term appointment replacing Amy Morrison, who is moving out of town.
Nelson was the only person to submit an application to the district by the May 20 deadline.
“It’s not that I feel like it makes a lot of difference in just four months,” Nelson told the Sentinel. “I just basically put my name in as, you know, somebody that would be interested to help out.”
She said she’s interested in “pretty much everything the district is dealing with, the mask or not mask COVID situation and renaming of Baranof School, and just funding.”
The board is seeking input from the community on a new name for the school, but Nelson said she prefers the present name.
“My mom went to Baranof School, I went to Baranof school, my kids, my grandkids all went to Baranof school... I’ve just always been one to say, you know, it’s like when we moved the Baranof statue,” Nelson said. “I know it’s offensive to some people. However, there are a lot of people with Russian ancestry that kind of feel like they were treated poorly by, you know, the tribes and whatnot… and it just all depends on what stories you’re reading and whatnot as to what really occurred.”
Nelson has been a vocal opponent of masking and other coronavirus mitigations.
“We’ve got monkeypox coming on. So who knows what’s going to happen?” she said. “I know there are a lot of people that are very afraid of viruses and think that masks were the answer, and I didn’t agree.”
“I kind of got involved with the Kids First Sitka (group),” she continued. “I have a niece that has three kids that she pulled out to home school (them). So I just have mixed feelings. I’m probably not with the majority, I’m a common sense person and kind of make my own decisions.”
The board meets on June 1 to consider Nelson’s application to fill the four-month vacancy.
The school district said comments on Nelson’s application can be submitted in person to the district office at 300 Kostrometinoff Street or by email to georgiad@sitkaschools.org. Comments are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 31.
In the Oct. 4 municipal election Sitka voters will select a member who will serve the remaining two years of Morrison’s term on the board.
